Fans that love stats would be woefully disappointed looking at Jontae Gilbert’s (6-1, 185) numbers during the 2023 season, and they would be missing the mark by a country mile rushing to any judgement. The Douglas High School (Atlanta) cornerback posted 21 tackles, 17 solo, with two tackles for a loss, one pick, and one pass broken up. The four-star was only targeted three times in 10 games.
The 2025 prospect has 26 offers and is ready to drop his list of favorites soon.
Gilbert covered his junior season on the field, “It was good. It was good for me actually. I improved on a lot of stuff. I improved against the run, with my off-man, my range at safety, I played safety in one game this season, and covering my side of the field this season.”
Asked how 3A Georgia offenses attacked him this season, the answer shows the amount of respect opposing QBs and OCs have for Gilbert.
“They threw my way three times this year; I had one PBU and one interception,” Gilbert said.
Along the recruiting trail, ACC, SEC, and a future Big Ten team is letting Gilbert know he is a top priority.
“The teams reaching out the most are USC, South Carolina, Auburn, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and Texas,” Gilbert shared.
Game-day trips were taken to South Carolina, USC, Clemson, and Georgia Tech during the season. The day spent with the Gamecocks was detailed.
“It went great,” Gilbert stated. “I visit them often; it was great to catch up with the coaches and the commits like (WR) Mazeo Bennett and (WDE) Dylan Stewart. I went for the Florida game; it was good.”
The connection with the Trojans’ coaching staff got Gilbert out to Los Angeles.
“It went great,” Gilbert said. “It was a great visit. Coach Donte (Williams – DB) and coach (Lincoln) Riley, they have a great staff there.”
Gilbert’s July decommitment from Ohio State opened the door for Clemson to offer earlier this month.
“Clemson has been on me since I was committed, but coach (Dabo) Swinney doesn’t offer committed guys,” Gilbert shared. “I am building a relationship with coach (Mike) Reed (CB) and coach (Mickey) Conn, their safeties coach.”
No immediate trips are on Gilbert’s schedule, but in the new year the Longhorns will welcome him in Austin.
“In January, I am going to Texas,” Gilbert stated.
The January trip will be a return to Austin for Gilbert.
“Texas is good,” Gilbert shared. “I went there during the 7-on-7 season back in the spring; that was a good visit for me. I got to meet coach Tashard Choice (RB) on that visit.”
Being an elite recruit often brings pressure to commit, but teams are not turning up the heat on Gilbert… for now.
“No, not at all,” Gilbert said. “They know I will take time after I was committed. They know I am taking it one day at a time.”
But the field will be narrowed down in the coming weeks.
“I have a top five coming out soon,” Gilbert shared.
Asked when the list will be released, Gilbert replied, “Springtime.”
Insight was given on how the list will be constructed.
“Special relationships and coaches I trust,” Gilbert stated. “I will be there for three to four years, I want to play faster, and where I will get the most development.”
