The beauty of high school football is that every year there are breakout stars across the country. The Sunshine State is never in low supply of elite performers, and the year turned in by 2025 Port Charlotte High School defensive lineman Myron Charles checks the box on rising star and elite talent.
All the things college coaches look for in a defensive lineman, at any position, Charles has. Charles has the size (6-6, 275), that athletic twitchiness desired, and the domination on the field mentality. The Pirates turned Charles loose against 3S competition getting a four-star performance in return.
Next season is lining up to being even more brutal for opposing Florida defenses.
“I am working on my ball get off, exploding from the hips for bull rushing, and working on hands like crazy,” Charles said. “My biggest thing is getting back into shape.”
Reporting a back squat max of 450, 285 max on power clean, and a 300-pound bench, Port Charlotte will be able to use their standout all over the field in 2023.
“I’m playing everywhere this season Charles,” stated. “They have me at nose guard, defensive tackle, and defensive end. I will be moved around a lot more this season. I am hoping to play some offense, like maybe as a pulling guard or at tight end.”
College programs have dropped 19 offers. Their feedback tells a story.
“A lot of college coaches talk about my ball get off, how fast I am, and my strength in general,” Charles shared. “They all say different things, but it is all positive.”
Teams don’t care which position Charles plays, they just know they want him.
“A lot of schools are waiting for me to grow,” Charles said. “Louisville sees me as a defensive tackle. I honestly don’t care; I believe I can play all of them. Over these next two years, I will grow and get faster.”
Three teams are continuing to evaluate Charles’ growth.
“I am talking to Georgia a lot,” Charles stated. “We are building a relationship. I am talking to Notre Dame and Clemson too. Those are the top three schools that are talking to me that have not offered.”
Seeing Charles in person has been a must for college coaches.
“Oklahoma was just here,” Charles shared. “Alabama plans to stop by in the next week or two. USF was here, and Louisville plans to come down next week. That’s all I know about.”
The offering programs are letting Charles know he is a priority in the 2025 class.
“I talk to Bama quite a bit,” Charles said. “The Gamecocks, I am talking to them a lot. Really, I am talking to all of them. I have been in touch with OU for a while. Their d-line coach (Todd Bates) and I have a bond. Every school right now is showing love.”
Louisville and Florida State got to show Charles around their facilities in April. The Seminoles left Charles impressed.
“When we pulled up, there was a line of coaches there,” Charles stated. “Coach Odell (Haggins – DT) is a great guy. I am glad I got to know him. I like FSU a lot. On visits they will tell you what you want to hear, but at FSU they seem like realistic coaches. They will tell you how it is. Coach Odell built a bond with my mom and me.
“Coach (Mike) Norvell, he brought up reasons I should not go to FSU, which was new to me. That is not something you think you’ll hear on a visit.”
A return trip to FSU and one possibly to Alabama are in the works for this summer. There’s a chance Charles will sign up for some camps to work with position coaches.
“There are a few camps I am trying to get to this summer,” Charles shared. “When I go, I will go to the schools that have offered me. I have to look at the dates that match up so I can go. When I go, I will go to the schools that have offered me to learn from them, the guys who could potentially be my coach.”
