VENICE, FL – After playing at the highest level against the best competition in the state of Florida, whichever college program lands Anthony Tanaka will get a grizzled offensive lineman ready to compete. A road-grader in the trenches for Venice High School, running behind Tanaka (6-4, 295) guarantees yards. Three offers have come Tanaka’s way with interest growing after offseason visits and summer college camps.
Satellite camps helped the Class of 2025 prospect get in front of more next level scouts.
“I camped at Miami of Ohio, Mercer, and West Florida – those are the three camps that I went to this summer,” Tanaka stated. “Those schools hosted the camps, but there were a whole bunch of other schools at those camps. The Miami of Ohio and Mercer camps, they were mega camps.”
O-line position coaches liked what they saw.
“I received solid feedback from the camps,” Tanaka said. “I had some great conversations with a lot of coaches; they said they liked the way I moved, that I have a lot of room to grow but I have all the stones to be a great player.”
Getting it done on the gridiron, Tanaka is also a workhorse in the classroom carrying a 4.4 GPA and in the weightroom.
“My bench max is 365 and my squat max is 525,” Tanaka shared. “We are getting after it in the weightroom every day. The only way to get stronger is to be in the weightroom.”
The extra work with college coaches and with the dumbbells all funnel towards taking the Indians to another state title game.
“My biggest thing right now is my hip flexibility and making sure I have faster feet,” Tanaka stated. “Everyone at the next level has size and strength, but not everyone can move quickly.”
Tanaka continued, “Our biggest gains have come from our conditioning and speed work. I can definitely tell that my conditioning has gotten better and my ability to move.”
Holding three offers, scouts are ready to see senior tape on Tanaka.
“Some Ivy League schools like Dartmouth, Cornell, Davidson, Miami of Ohio, those are some of the schools showing interest that have not offered me yet,” Tanaka said.
Rounds were made this offseason setting up a fall visits and a future decision.
“I went on a road trip this spring visiting 14 colleges in seven days,” Tanaka shared. “It was a trip around the south; we went to a whole bunch of schools. I got a lot of exposure and learned what I like and don’t like in a college.”
