After Palm Beach Central (Fla.) romped through the 2022 season posting a 12-2 record with 549 points scored, there are big shoes to fill in the Broncos’ pocket. Ahmad Haston signed with UMass leaving an open competition at quarterback for Palm Beach Central, a position Jorris Shepard (6-2, 170) is fighting to fill.
With the depth chart under center wide open, Shepard explained the Broncos’ scheme.
“We run more of a Spread; we like to air the ball out,” Shephard said. “We put the ball in our receivers’ hands.”
The up-tempo practices are preparing the 2026 talent for 4M varsity action.
“It is nothing like I had ever done before,” Shepard stated. “Our practices are fast-paced and high energy. Our practices are more like a game.”
Getting extra reps with QB coaches Henry Columbi and Quincy Avery, Shepard spoke about his offseason focus.
“This summer, we practice in the morning, then I do speed training, and after that I throw with my coach in the afternoon,” Shepard shared. “I am working on getting the ball to pop out of my hands, getting better spin on the ball, and being more accurate.”
In addition to offseason practices with the Broncos, Shepard also spun it with 7-on-7 squad Public Enemy. All the extra work helped while performing at college camps.
“I went to camps at Keiser, Florida Atlantic, Miami, and Florida,” Shepard said. “My best performance was probably at Miami during their 7-on-7 camp.”
Shepard continued, “It was a team camp. I played really well. The ball was coming out nice, I was spinning it, and I was reading defenses well.”
An update from the Gainesville camp was also provided, “It went really well. That was one of my best camps. Through the individual drills and then the 7-on-7 portion, I did really well. Anthony Richardson was helping me in the drills; he was coaching me up.”
Another opportunity to spin it was cancelled in Tallahassee due to the weather, but that trip turned into a visit.
“With Palm Beach Central, we went to Florida State for a camp, but it was rained out,” Shepard stated. “We went to FAMU (Florida A&M) as well. The FSU visit was good. We toured their facilities, saw the weight room and locker room. It was really nice.”
The Broncos open their 2023 season on the road against Creekside (St. Johns, Fla.) on August 25.
