The 2023 Florida high school football season laid down the tracks for Austan Cristiaan (6-0, 165) to the next level. Wowing all playing varsity ball for Canterbury has an eighth grader, even college programs were impressed leading to early recruiting attention. With the spotlight growing, Cristiaan is back on the field preparing for another varsity run at Sunshine State competition.
After completing his first varsity season with the Cougars, Cristiaan reflected on his accomplishments on the field.
“Definitely creating a bond with the older guys while being one of the youngest on the team,” Cristiaan said. “You have to create a bond with your players; you have to make your teammates want to play for you. You have to create the bond to be on the same page. Scoring my first TD in a varsity game, that was a special moment.”
The skills are being sharpened.
“This offseason I am working at CPT; they are great,” Cristiaan stated. “They do draft prep with combine guys, and they work with college players. They work on your speed and directional movement. Matt and Anthony run it. One brother is a physical therapist, and his other brother runs the drill and speed aspect. They do it all in the same spot; you don’t have to go anywhere else.”
Watching those getting the job down at the NFL level is helping Cristiaan learn more about the game.
“Of course, there’s Patrick Mahomes and Lamar Jackson; they are insane highlight reels,” Cristiaan shared. “I watch Joe Burrows, and my favorite, Dak Prescot. I watch how they control the game, the play calls they make, and how they read the defenses. They know which plays will work before they snap the ball. You can learn a lot by watching them.”
Game-day visits were taken to Clemson, Florida State, Auburn, and Texas A&M… recruiting interest is coming to the Class of 2028 talent.
“I have been up to Pitt a lot, I have a lot of communication with them,” Cristiaan said. “A team we’ve seen quite a bit is Texas A&M; we have a few connections there. We go to Tennessee quite a bit. Recently, I went to Clemson; we like them a lot.”
Looking to the summer months, Cristiaan has an idea which programs he wants to see and work with in camp environments.
“It is still early for us, we haven’t made a camp schedule yet,” Cristiaan stated. “Right now, I am making the foundation for a camp schedule; I am looking at SEC and ACC schools.”
