A pairing between Winston Watkins Jr. (5-11, 182) and new Colorado head coach Deion Sanders grabbed national attention on Dec. 4, 2022. The five-star 2025 Florida receiver essentially had his choice of any school in the country, opting to verbally commit to the Buffaloes added even more swag to coach Sanders’ start in Boulder. Jump ahead 11 months later, the Florida prospect has reopened his recruitment.
Sunday afternoon, Watkins announced his decommitment sharing the reasons with RNG.
“I am making sure I am making the right decision; I am keeping my options open,” Watkins said. “There are a lot of schools wanting to contact me, but they are scared of Colorado. I want to make sure everyone can show me their best.”
Asked how Colorado was notified of the change in relationship, Watkins stated, “My dad talked to them, they found out today.”
For now, college programs will have to pitch Watkins over the phone or on Facetime, visits are on hold until First Baptist Academy (Naples) completes their 2023 season.
“Right now, I am worried about the playoffs,” Watkins said. “Right now, I am not worried about taking any visits.”
Watkins listed the teams in heavy recruiting contact, “Ohio State, Texas, Florida State, Florida, Miami, and Oregon.”
Asked if Colorado is still a team he is considering, Watkins replied, “For sure.”
