Around the 50-offer mark, at some point Jett White (6-2, 170) was going to have to start trimming the list down. The four-star corner from Edison High School (Miami) has his pick of schools with 10 at the top of his current list.
White’s top 10 in no order: Alabama, USC, Oregon, Ohio State, Penn State, Louisville, Maryland, Miami, Florida, and Florida State.
Insight was given on five of White’s top teams.
Maryland: “Maryland was a school I liked from Day 1. They always thought highly of me, and coach Locks (Mike Locksley) always felt I could help the program get over the humps of the Ohio States and Michigans of their world. They are a great staff with a winning culture and only a few pieces away from winning the conference; I could be one of those pieces. One thing, my contact, coach Smoke (Gerald Dixon), is no longer there; he took a job with CBS and 247Sports.”
Ohio State: “Ohio State was a place I fell in love with on my first trip to the Shoe. The facilities are amazing. Coach (Tim) Walton, I like him a lot. The knowledge he has being an NFL coach and now as a college coach, I feel my development will skyrocket playing there.
“And his assistant coach, coach (Gerren) Duhart, is the reason for this. He was actually the coach who began the relationship and was interested in recruiting me when he was at Michigan State before moving over to Ohio State. He has always liked me, my film, and my play. He showed coach Walton my film and that’s how I ended up visiting Ohio State and getting offered.”
Oregon: “Oregon, I have loved them since I was a kid second to USC. I have family working and coaching there. Coach “Meat” (Demetrice Martin), their cornerbacks coach, is my uncle. Coach (Rashad) Wadood (GA) was my cornerback trainer at one time. Karl Holmes (dir. player engagement) was my sport’s performance trainer since I was like 10 years old ‘til I was 14 years old. His cousin, Darnay Holmes (UCLA/NY Giants), actually took me under his wing and was a mentor to me growing up along with Cole Martin, coach Meat’s son, and along with all the young ProWay kids.
“ProWay is a 7-on-7 organization founded by Darick Holmes (Buffalo Bills/ Colts) and is Darnay’s dad. The Holmes family has been great to me.”
Penn State: “Penn State’s cornerbacks coach, coach Terry Smith, has been recruiting me since the eighth grade. This is a place I have been to several times, and he has been to LA a few times. They have also come to Miami to visit. They feel I’m the next Joey Porter Jr. in that defensive scheme.”
USC: “I love SC and coach Donte (Williams). Coach Donte is family. There are only a few coaches I would love to play for, and coach Donte is right at the top of that list. He’s been following me since youth ball watching my training videos, workouts, etc. You can’t go wrong with choosing USC as a school and coach Donte Willams as your position coach.”
While White has his top schools, there are other programs catching his attention before he announces on Jan. 6.
“There could be fireworks going off at the declaration on Jan. 6th with a school not named in the top 10,” White shared. “I have bubble schools that are right there but not in the top 10 like Tennessee, Oklahoma, Utah, Washington, and Auburn. I could shock the world; anything can happen. It’s going to get interesting so don’t miss out Jan. 6, 2024, the All-American Bowl on NBC.”
White, originally from Southern California (Los Alamitos), verbally committed to USC on Sept. 25, 2021. The four-star defensive back opened up his recruiting process again in January before moving to South Florida over the summer.
The Trojans will get another chance to impress White this weekend when he returns to Los Angeles for USC’s crosstown rivalry game against the Bruins.
