The tumbling dice for signal callers in Gainesville continued to roll on Monday with the announcement that 2015 Florida starting quarterback Treon Harris is transferring.
Gators head coach Jim McElwain moved Harris from under center to wide out in early February giving Florida another new starting quarterback to start a new season yet again. Harris by no means was the most talented quarterback in the college ranks, or perhaps even on Florida’s roster, but he did give the team something no other signal caller on the team has – meaningful SEC experience.
Harris led the team with 1,676 passing yards filling in for Will Grier after the freshman was suspended over a failed drug test. Harris struggled with his completion percentage taking the reins of the offense six games into the season, and arguably during Florida’s toughest stretch of games on the schedule. Harris completed just 50.6 percent of his passes, far below Grier’s 65.8 completion percentage to start the season. The difference in playmaking ability showed on the stat sheet with Grier averaging 200 yards per game to Harris’ 139.
Florida posted an announcement on Harris’ transfer via their official Twitter page reading, “We are confirming reports that Treon Harris is transferring from the University of Florida.”
Harris was a highly regarded recruit coming out of Booker T. Washington High School in Miami leading his squad to three consecutive Florida 4A championship games (2011-2013) winning back-to-back titles in 2012 and 2013. Harris bailed Florida out during his true freshman season also starting the final six games on the schedule throwing for 1,019 yards with nine touchdowns. The dual-threat quarterback also rushed for 338 yards with three scores in 2014 adding 223 yards off 96 carries in 2015 becoming the team’s second leading rusher behind Kelvin Taylor.
Harris’ transfer signals the desire to want to play quarterback at the collegiate level. The 5’11”, 201 pound, talent had reported offers from Auburn, North Carolina State, South Florida, Central Florida, Ole Miss, Illinois, Mississippi State, Florida International, Miami, and Clemson before signing with the Gators as part of the 2014 recruiting class.
