Former 4-star QB Asiantii Woulard transferring from UCLA

As the spring semesters end across the nation and college football rosters are reevaluated various former high school standouts start another round of recruiting, a round most thought would never happen again after signing their Letters of Intent. One such former top player now going through the aggravating process of finding a new school to play for is Asiantii Woulard.

Woulard was a 4-star quarterback coming out of Winter Park, Florida as part of the 2013 recruiting class. The very athletic signal caller had upwards of 20 scholarship offers from teams like Clemson, Duke, Maryland, Ole Miss, Syracuse, Cincinnati, Boston College, and Wake Forest but headed to Westwood.

After sitting behind star quarterback Brett Hundley, who bypassed his senior year for a shot at the NFL, a spot opened up under center but the problem was a backlog of top talent vying for Hundley’s vacated position. When spring practices ended the would-be redshirt sophomore was fighting expected starter Jerry Neuheisel and early 5-star enrollee gunslinger Josh Rosen (St. John Bosco) for playing time.

Wednesday afternoon the 6’3”, 210 pound, quarterback announced his departure from the Bruins writing, “After much thought, I’ll be transferring from UCLA. Thankful for the opportunity & great experience, now looking forward to a new beginning.”

Bruins head coach Jim Mora did not name a starter at the conclusion of spring practices but one can assume Woulard saw the writing on the wall with Rosen coming in expecting to be the future of the program.

A new challenge is now laid at Coach Mora’s feet. Should an injury to Neuheisel occur late in the season, assuming he wins the job as the Bruins’ starting quarterback, would he take off Rosen’s redshirt in 2015? This scenario is far more likely now that Woulard is gone unless Mike Fafaul proves he could handle to offense in Neuheisel’s absence.
