Being a top quarterback in a given recruiting class, said player will have a long list of next level suitors banging down the door. In Findlay, Ohio, Ryan Montgomery (6-3, 215) is that guy college programs are raving about wanting to sign in the 2025 class. At the 30-offer mark, four teams are jumping out ahead of the pack with a commitment that could come sooner than later.
Throughout the 2023 season, Montgomery worked over Ohio defenses passing for 3,300-plus yards connecting on 38 passing scores while rushing for 10 touchdowns.
“It was a good year, not just for me but also for the team,” Montgomery said. “We won conference; it had been almost a decade since our school won conference. We beat some big-time teams that had kind of kicked our butts in years past. We lost in the first round unfortunately; we lost on a two-point conversion at the end the other team got.
“I wanted the season to last longer, it didn’t, other than that, it was a fun year for me and the guys. We had an explosive offense; we went five wide all game in every game. I developed a lot. I felt a lot more comfortable this year, and I will keep getting better.”
College scouts are liking what they are seeing in the four-star’s game.
“They like my level of comfort in the pocket, my pocket movement, and how I don’t get rattled at all,” Montgomery shared. “They like that I am poised in the pocket, and they like that I can make every throw.
“My knowledge of the game from last year to this year has increased a lot. My preparation, the amount of film I watch, how important that is to me, they can tell pre-snap I know where I am going with the ball. I minimized mistakes, it was a really good year.”
Expanding his ability to change any given game is the focus this offseason.
“I’m really working on hard on speed and agility,” Montgomery stated. “I used my legs a lot more this year, teams will have to respect my legs next year. I wouldn’t say I am a true dual threat, but I can get the job done. I will work on being bigger, faster, and stronger. The mental aspect of the game, recognizing fronts and coverage and finding areas to expose them, is part of my focus this offseason.”
The constant contact with college coaches is helping Montgomery further his understanding of the game.
“I am blessed to be in the position I am to talk to all of these coaches,” Montgomery said. “I am able to watch their practice reps, learn about their offense and what they are teaching; I am learning their reads at the college level. I am getting an advantage from talking to them about that.
“I am learning fronts, stunts, coverages, and linebacker levels; I call it the umbrella. Understanding that defense will tell you what is going on up front. I am getting a head start. I love this stuff and eat this stuff up. I will keep learning, there is always more to learn in the game of football.”
Along the recruiting trail, four teams have pushed ahead of the others for now letting Montgomery know he is a priority in the ’25 cycle.
“South Carolina, Florida, Georgia, and Auburn, those four are definitely the ones that are the most consistent,” Montgomery shared.
Key visits will begin this month.
“My dad and I are traveling down south to South Carolina and Georgia on the 20th and 21st,” Montgomery stated. “Then I am going to Florida in early February and Auburn in the spring if possible.”
The influential trips could show the path to that next level fit.
“On the visits, I am looking at my relationship with the staff, my position coach, and the head coach,” Montgomery said. “I am looking at who you will surround yourself with for the next three to four years.
“I am also looking at the school itself. In the college football world, with coaching changes, it is hard to commit to a coach. I am looking at the school itself, having that comfortable feeling where it is like a second home, the offensive scheme, how I see myself fitting the scheme, and how they see me fitting the scheme. The culture as well. Those are the main things.”
When an announcement may happen, that could be in the near future or on down the line, much will depend on the four possible visits.
“You never know what will happen, I have a full year until I sign,” Montgomery shared. “When I sign, that is where I will go. With the changes that will happen from now until next December, it is hard to tell when I will commit. I am eyeing late February or early March, that would be ideal, but I am not promising that. I may wait and take my official visits. I could wait it out, but the ideal time would be soon, like in a month or two from now.”
