The wild college football career that Everett Golson has put together had another key page written into the dynamic story on Monday when Florida State head coach Jimbo Fisher named the senior transfer the team’s opening game starter.

Golson became a national star in 2012 leading the Fighting Irish to the BCS National Championship Game. The South Carolina native looked to be just starting to come into his own after throwing for 2,405 yards with 12 touchdowns against six interceptions. Due to a cheating scandal, Golson missed the 2013 season entirely but made a triumphant return in 2014 completing 60 percent of his passes while tossing for 3,445 yards with 29 touchdowns. Drive stalling sacks (27) and 14 picks helped lead to the parting of ways.

Notre Dame head coach Brian Kelly lost confidence in Golson in the last game of the regular season against USC sidelining him in favor of Malik Zaire. Zaire, a sophomore, won the starting job in the spring prompting Golson to transfer to FSU.

In a twist of fate, Golson will play for the team that started his down fall in South Bend in 2014. A game winning touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter from Golson to Will Fuller was called back nullifying a touchdown that would have more than likely given Notre Dame a road win over the Seminoles but instead fell 31-27.

Golson beat out Jameis Winston’s 2014 backup, junior Sean Maguire for the starting job. Maguire completed 25-of-49 passes last season for 339 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions.

FSU opens their season on Sept. 5 against Texas State.
