On Saturday Sept. 26, Georgia got the easy tune-up game desired before going into a meat and potatoes stretch of their schedule that includes consecutive games against Alabama, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida, Kentucky, and Auburn.
Saturday’s game against Southern went as planned with the Bulldogs getting a 48-6 win improving to 4-0. Georgia also saw their star players like running back Nick Chubb rush 15 times for 131 yards with two scores, quarterback Greyson Lambert complete 9-of-10 passes for 146 yards with two touchdowns, and wide receiver Malcolm Mitchell pull down a game-high five passes for 96 yards with a touchdown.
On the other side of the lopsided win was a devastating injury for Jaguars wide receiver Devon Gales. Gales was injured while blocking on a kickoff return in the third quarter. The hit that the walk-on redshirt sophomore took resulted in several fractures of his neck requiring surgery on Sunday.
The surgery was successful and per reports Gales does have movement in his upper body.
The Georgia coaching staff starting with Mark Richt has gone out of their way to show support of the Jaguars and Gales visiting the young man on Sunday and flying his parents to Athens on Sunday from Baton Rouge so they could be with their child through this traumatic moment in time.
A fund has been started to help with Devon Gales’ medical expenses:
Southern University System Foundation
c/o Devon Gales Fund
PO Box 9562
Baton Rouge, LA, 70813
Gales is still at Athens Regional Hospital where he will remain until cleared to return back to Baton Rouge.
Richt tweeted out asking Georgia Bulldog fans to help in the fund raising efforts posting, “Calling all Dawgs. If you would like to help Southern University Devon Gales and his family with medical expenses here’s how we can do it.” Richt added in a separate post the website: Devon Gales fund raising site.
Southern returns to action on Oct. 10 to play Alabama State after a bye week and Georgia hosts No. 13 Alabama on Saturday with a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff.
