The Gators added a lot of potential to their 2017 recruiting class when in-state three-star prospect Shawn Davis verbally committed on Saturday.
Davis went out onto the field for Miami Southridge on Friday night helping the Spartans beat Edison 7-0 in their season opener and then released a commitment video on Saturday. The video showed a pile of recruiting letters from schools nationwide on the floor. A makeshift glass podium was in front of Davis with two schools in front of him, Miami and Florida. The “switch-a-roo” was in effect as Davis sported a Miami Hurricanes shirt in the video. In the end he swiped Miami to the ground with the other offers picking Florida.
The 5-11, 190 pound, talent started drawing national attention his way during his junior season with the Spartans. The Spartans posted a 7-5 record with their defensive playmaker showing a repeated knack for picking off passes, deflecting passes, or picking up a fumble for a quick-six. Davis reports a time of 4.5 in the 40-yard dash but appears to have faster than 4.5 game speed.
Davis was pushing 30 scholarship offers when he committed to Florida. Beyond Miami, the Gators won the recruiting battle over other SEC teams like Alabama, Auburn, Arkansas, Georgia, LSU, Kentucky, South Carolina, Ole Miss, and Tennessee.
Florida now has 16 verbal commitments with three corners pledging to help fight for the “DBU” honors. The Gators staff has been on a roll lately landing four-star players like defensive tackle Fred Hansard and running back Adarius Lemons over the last week.
