When Eagle’s Landing Christian Academy running back Trevor Gear is on the field, good things happen for the Chargers. The same does not hold true for Georgia high school football opposition. Gear played in the last seven games of his sophomore season guiding ELCA to a state championship. With the pressure on during his junior campaign, Gear did not fold under the pressure leading the Chargers to a second consecutive state title.
Interest is growing for the 6’0”, now 210 pound, back from the McDonough area. Through seven games in 2014, Gear rushed for 800 yards, posted 105 yards receiving, and had 12 total touchdowns. During a full season in 2015, he tore it up gaining over 1,600 yards in the running game, adding another 100 in the passing attack scoring all 18 of his touchdowns on the ground. Gear has three offers on the table from Mercer, Ball State, and Navy but interest is there from Georgia, Georgia Tech, East Carolina, Purdue, Western Kentucky, Georgia Southern, Texas, Indiana, and Ole Miss to name a few.
The offseason for juniors is a critical time to get in front of coaches in person be it during an unofficial visit or at a camp to forge and push forward a potential bond that could lead to an offer or push said player up a given school’s recruiting board. Gear has already visited Georgia and Georgia Tech and is coming off a visit to Ole Miss.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Gear to talk about his visit to the Rebels, his upcoming unofficial visit schedule, and received a recruiting news update.
Interview
Trevor, you just got back from visiting Ole Miss. How did the visit to Oxford go for you?
“It went good. I met the coaches, watched a practice, and took a full tour of the campus. We went into the locker room and put on jerseys too. It was a really good visit.”
You’ve been on a couple of visits to some big schools already. Was there anything about the visit to Ole Miss that stood out to you?
“I had been there before, I went there last summer, so I had a good idea of what to expect.”
Was there anything about watching the practice that caught your eye?
“I have been to a lot of college games, but being five yards away instead of up in the stands, the action on the field is way faster. I liked everything about the practice and I liked how the coaches worked with the players.”
Did Ole Miss talk to you about where you are at on their board?
“I talked to the running backs coach (Derrick Nix) and the Ole Miss safeties coach (Corey Batoon). The running backs coach said they are looking at me as a running back and the safeties coach said they were looking at me as a safety. I didn’t know they were looking at me as a safety.”
What does your unofficial visit schedule look like going forward?
“I’m flying out to Old Dominion on Tuesday and then we are going to ECU (East Carolina). I’m visiting those two schools next. I think in the upcoming weeks I’m going to Indiana and Purdue on April 15 and 16.”
What are you looking forward to from your visits to ECU and Old Dominion?
“I’m looking forward to being around Coach (Charles) Bankins (running backs coach). He was at Vanderbilt and now he is at Old Dominion. I’ve been talking to him for a while. At ECU, I’m looking forward to talking to Coach (Antonio) King. I’ve been talking to him for a while. I’m looking forward to meeting their whole staff. I have not heard that much about the school and program, I’m looking forward to learning more and meeting their staff.”
You have offers from Navy, Mercer, and Ball State, which schools that have not offered you yet are showing interest in you?
“Indiana, Purdue, Georgia Southern, and I’ve started talking to the Texas Longhorns running backs coach, Coach (Anthony) Johnson. I’m still talking to Georgia and Georgia Tech. I’m about an hour from Georgia and 20-30 minutes from Georgia Tech. I meant to go to Georgia Tech on Monday but did not get to go. I’ll go when I get back. North Carolina State is another one. I have not talked to them in a while but they wanted me to come visit.”
Are you going to any college camps coming up?
“I know I am going to some but I’m not sure which ones. I’m going to some with my school and some individually.”
Do you have an idea which schools you may camp with this summer?
“I will probably go to Clemson, Tennessee, and Georgia.”
Are you playing any spring sports for ELCA?
“No. I stopped playing baseball to focus on football. I’ve been training five days a week for football.”
What was the last bench, squat, and power clean max you put up?
“We did all of that last week. I put up 300 on bench, 445 on squat, and 275 on power clean.”
Are you going to any exposure camps this offseason?
“I’m going to the Charlotte Opening Regional on April 24.”
Will that be the first 40-yard dash time you’ll post this offseason?
“Yes.”
What are you aiming to run at that camp?
“It is laser timed so I want to be in the 4.5 range. Running a 4.4 would be great but I’m aiming for 4.5.”
You mentioned training five days a week this offseason, what all are you working on to improve upon for your senior year?
“My acceleration, my explosiveness, and my agility.”
How is everything going in the classroom?
“Everything is going well in the classroom. I have a 3.0 GPA but I have to get that up.”
Have you taken the ACT or SAT yet?
“I took the ACT last year and got a 20 on it. I’m taking it again on April 9.”
Trevor, thanks for your time today and good luck with your upcoming visits to Old Dominion and ECU.
“Thank you.”
