One didn’t have to be a soothsayer to see how the recruiting process for Lorenzo Cowan (6-4, 220) was going to play out. The three-star defensive end from Savannah’s Jenkins High School (Ga.) had been a verbal commit to the Kentucky Wildcats since Sept. 10, but reopened his recruiting process on Dec. 13 after an official visit to USC. On Friday, Cowan made it official hitching his future with the Trojans in the Big Ten.
Cowan gave insight into his recruiting journey with the Trojans that led to his commitment.
Q&A with Lorenzo Cowan
When did USC start recruiting you?
“Around October.”
Which USC coach has been the point person in your recruitment?
“Coach (Roy) Manning; their outside linebackers coach.”
What is that relationship like with coach Manning?
“Coach Manning and I have a really good relationship; we’ve been building a relationship for the past two months. It has been all good things to this point. I plan on furthering that relationship as time goes on. We are getting tight.”
What was USC saying to you over the phone that got you interested enough to want to take an official visit?
“It wasn’t more them convincing me to go, it was me knowing the type of program they have and wanting to see what it is like.”
What were the factors during your official visit that let you know USC is the place for you?
“Seeing what it is like first hand, seeing the community, how cozy the campus is in a hectic city, the security they have, the academics, and USC is a powerhouse; it all plays a factor. I have a chance to play as early as I choose to play at USC.”
When did you commit, and which coach on staff did you commit to?
“I committed to the staff about two or three days ago. I committed to coach (Lincoln) Riley and coach Manning in person. They came to visit me. They followed up after the official visit.”
What was that moment like for you committing in-person to coach Riley and coach Manning?
“I was nervous. It was a little surreal, but I made it happen. I felt that was best for me. Those are the guys who needed to hear it, when I had the opportunity to tell them face to face, I did that.”
Cowan close the interview with a message for the USC fans.
“Fight on.”
