Covering any sport, the difference between the names fans remember and the ones they forget usually comes down to preparation and opportunity. One of the blessings in college football recruiting is the collegiate camp. No matter the high school attended, the grade classification, or the position played, if a player comes ready at a college camp they will get noticed. Grayson (Loganville, Ga.) 2025 quarterback Ricky Simmons III put in the hard work during the offseason preparing for the upcoming season and college camps. The preparation is paying off making the most of the opportunities presented this summer.
Simmons has already competed at a handful of college camps.
“I have been to Middle Tennessee State, that was the first one, Western Carolina, Auburn, Troy, and Mercer,” Simmons said.
The experience competing in front of the Blue Raiders’ coaches was covered.
“That went amazing,” Simmons stated. “I competed at that camp. Their QB coach, coach (Brent) Stockstill, said I was probably the best 2025 QB he had seen all day. After the camp he wanted to talk to me. I went last year; he said I improved so much in a year and that he was proud of me. He told me to keep in contact with him during the season and that he wants to see my film. Hopefully I will get the offer once I get my film to him from the season.”
A show was also put on in front of the Catamounts’ coaching staff.
“That was also a great camp, that was on Friday,” Simmons shared. “Coach Kade Bell (OC/QB), that was my first time at their camp, he said the same thing as coach Stockstill; they want to see my early season film. They want me there for a visit this season. He said for being undersized, I have great ball skills and that I can spin the ball very well.”
More attention was received after slinging the rock around the yard for the Trojans’ coaches.
“The Troy camp went well,” Simmons said. “That was my second mega camp I went to. Coach (Thomas) Morton (OA – Troy), I hit him up after the camp to see how I did. He said I had a great day and to keep working on things like my base and arm slot.”
Sun Belt, Southern Conference, Conference USA, or SEC led camps, the feedback has been the same.
“The Auburn camp went well,” Simmons stated. “That was my second time there. They said I improved from last year. Auburn also said that once I get film rolling in, I could get an offer from them. Coach Jesse Stone (SOA) said I can come to their camp to be evaluated but he wants me to post more clips of me throwing on Twitter more consistently.”
Asked what he has done well to garner the post-camp attention from college coaches, Simmons replied, “What is setting me apart is my ball placement and my energy. I like to put out a great first impression. Like at Western Carolina, I wanted to show coach K-Bell what I can do during his first time seeing me.”
Simmons continued, “At the Mercer mega camp, there were a lot of coaches that were talking to me. They were telling me I can throw the ball well, especially for my size, and that I was the best 2025 QB they saw at the camp.”
As a team, Grayson competed at Georgia Tech’s 7-on-7 tournament, another big outing for Simmons.
“Last week we were at Georgia Tech on Thursday,” Simmons stated. “I got some reps. My first drive went for a touchdown. I went 7-for-7 on the next drive.”
There are two more chances for Simmons to show off the arm coming up this week.
“We will be at Georgia for a 7-on-7 tournament on Tuesday, and I think I am going to Georgia Tech this week,” Simmons said.
