Step on the field, even the practice field, in Georgia against 7A talents, you better be ready to play. Teams like Grayson High School (Loganville) are so deep, their players routinely matriculate to the next level making national noise while the program adds winning season after winning season. Working on that line to put his skills on display for a national collegiate audience while keeping Grayson a powerhouse is Class of 2026 Rams’ quarterback Travis Burgess.
The Rams were once again one of the Peach State’s best, producing a record of 11-3 last fall. Burgess (6-5, 190) received varsity snaps behind starter Jeff Davis.
Burgess was asked what some of the key takeaways were that he learned by watching Davis lead the Rams.
“I think he had great leadership skills,” Burgess stated. “He was able to put the team on his back. As a QB you are the face of the program, you have to represent yourself well; he did well doing that. Watching him on and off campus, just because you are a good player not everyone will like you. His character is one thing I learned.
“From the football part, his mental part. How he studied the game, asking questions, and helping others; those were the attributes I learned.”
The Rams’ athletic department is getting more than a football player in Burgess. He’s already won a JV state championship on the hardwood and is now in the state title game with the varsity squad.
Alternating between the sports, Burgess was asked about how he is preparing for the fall schedule on the gridiron this offseason.
“We have started workouts and meetings,” Burgess shared. “I meet with my offense every day to build that connection and bond so in spring we are not just building it then so during the season we are tight and trust each other. I am doing the physical work, throwing every other day and I am in the film room trying to get better.”
On what he brings to the field as a quarterback, Burgess said, “I think I have a very strong arm; the deep ball is a top attribute. My speed, I think my speed is underrated. Most consider me a pro style quarterback; I see myself as a dual threat. On the mental side, I have learned a lot more. I can pick apart a defense much easier.”
The Rams’ offense that produced 231 passing yards and 183.6 rush yards per game will keep the threads of that same prolific attack in 2024.
“We haven’t confirmed it yet,” Burgess stated. “Last year our offense was like Tennessee’s offense, I think we will continue that in 2024.”
Executing that scheme, Burgess covered how he is developing his game.
“I think my speed is underrated, but my footwork is a weak point,” Burgess said. “I focus on my footwork, off-platform throws, and I work in the pocket to extend plays. And I am working on my accuracy.”
The Under Armour camp in Georgia allowed Burgess the opportunity to compete against other top players in the region.
“It went well,” Burgess shared. “There was good competition out there. Being out there, seeing all the quarterbacks from around the state and the region, I got to see where I stand. I also got to see how I can improve against other quarterbacks.”
As Burgess works to make that future transition from high school to college, programs at the next level are working to bring the three-star to their campus. The Knights hosted Burgess for a game back in October.
“I had an opportunity to visit UCF; they invited me for a game in October,” Burgess stated. “I thought their atmosphere was great. It was a great game. The coaches were nice, and I met some of the players as well. They have great facilities as well.”
Arizona State, Boston College, and Pitt have extended offers. Interested parties were listed, “Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Auburn, and Georgia Tech.”
The coming months will be busy for Burgess with a half dozen trips in the works.
“I might visit Indiana, Wake Forest, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, and maybe FSU,” Burgess said.
The Rams’ varsity basketball squad is 29-2 riding a 14-game winning streak heading into the state title game on March 9 against McEachern. Per MaxPreps, Grayson is ranked No. 12 nationally with McEachern slotted at No. 13.
