When Ryan Montgomery drops back to pass, there is magic in the air. The Class of 2025 quarterback put on a show during his sophomore campaign burning Ohio high school defenses with his arm and legs. Over 20 college programs have identified Montgomery as the playmaker who can lead their team to the promised land. The process remains wide open for the four-star, but teams are making a heavy impact in his recruitment this spring, especially SEC programs.
Identified as one of the top prospects in his class, recruiting coordinators across the country are doing their best to keep their program fresh in Montgomery’s mind.
“The teams reaching out the most right now are Michigan, Georgia, Ohio State, Clemson, LSU, and Michigan State,” Montgomery said. “There are more, but those are the schools off the top of my head right now.”
Eight different programs spanning the ACC, Big Ten, and SEC have welcomed Montgomery to their facilities this spring.
“I have been to Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State, Kentucky, South Carolina, Clemson, Georgia, and Florida,” Montgomery stated.
Montgomery gave insight into his three of his most recent stops.
Florida: “It was great. That was my first time on campus. Coach (Ryan) O’Hara (OA), their QB coach, I have been communicating with him very frequently. Coach O’Hara has been doing an amazing job recruiting me. If not for him, we wouldn’t have gone. He has done a phenomenal job with me.
“I was surprised by how nice it was. I spent a lot of time with coach O’Hara. I talked with coach (Billy) Napier a couple of times throughout the day. They have great people at Florida. They are building something special. It was a really nice visit. I learned a lot; it was eye opening. I am interested in them for sure.”
Georgia: “Georgia has been on me for quite a while. They are at the top of the list, if not the top. I have been there several times, but this was my first time catching a spring practice. That was probably the most intense practice I have been to. They are back-to-back champs, to see they are not taking a step back is crazy. What I mean by that, they were acting like they’d never won a championship. They were striving to get better; that is reassuring.
“During the visit, that was my first-time meeting coach (Mike) Bobo (OC/QB); coach (Todd) Monken (Ravens) was my main recruiter. He is an awesome person. Georgia has been recruiting me for a while, including coach (Kirby) Smart; they are at the top of the list for me.”
Clemson: “It was great. I have been there a couple of times now; the same deal as with Georgia. This was my first time seeing them practice; I caught two of their practices there. With their new offensive coordinator, coach (Garrett) Riley, I have talked to him a couple of times since he got the job. With the success he had at TCU, I know he will do well there.
“At Clemson, the culture is different there. I like how family based they are and how they approach things; I respect that a lot. They only offer kids going into the summer of their junior year. Clemson is not a school that throws out offers. They sit down and build a relationship with you; they get to know you. You have to be talented enough to play there, but it is a lot about the culture and fitting into it. I had a great time there.”
After racking up the frequent flier miles, there is one last spring visit on the calendar.
“I am going to Ohio State’s spring game this weekend, I think that will be it,” Montgomery said.
The spring game in Columbus is about more than building a stronger rapport with the Buckeyes’ coaching staff.
“My brother (OL Luke Montgomery) is playing in it,” Montgomery shared. “I am excited to see him finally in the Shoe. It’ll be surreal to see it. I am excited to see him and to get back up there to see the coaching staff again. I’m ready to enjoy my time up there.”
