While everything is clean and perfect at Peachtree Ridge High School (Suwannee, Ga.) this season, there is construction underway on defense. Bringing the hardhat, speed, and skills to the gridiron, Dorian Barney (6-1, 165) is building an island college coaches want.
Taking on 7A Georgia teams, Barney spoke about the Lions 7-0 season.
“The season is going well,” Barney said. “We are winning, that is the most important part. I am doing my thing on the field. The season is good.”
Applying his trade, Barney is racked up 18 stops, two tackles for a loss, two QB hurries and is tied for a team-high with three picks while leading his squad defending six passes.
“We run 2-read, 3-, and man, but we mostly run 3- and man,” Barney stated. “My favorite is probably 3, because I can bait a QB throwing the deep ball to a short pass and break on the ball.”
Aiding in the impressive stats is physical growth.
“My speed – my speed has gotten better this year from last year; that might be my biggest improvement this year,” Barney shared.
On the recruiting trail, 12 D-I teams have extended their opportunity to the four-star corner.
“Georgia, UNC, Florida State, Michigan State, there are a lot of schools showing interest,” Barney said. “I can’t think of everyone right now.”
ACC and SEC teams have been able to see Barney on Saturdays this fall.
“I went to Clemson, South Carolina, UNC, and Georgia,” Barney stated.
In Athens on Oct. 7, Barney covered the in-state trip.
“It was good,” Barney said. “The atmosphere was good at the Kentucky game. They treated me well. It was a good visit.”
Barney got to take in collegiate action at the Panthers’ home stadium in Charlotte.
“The UNC visit was good,” Barney shared. “It wasn’t at their home stadium; it was at the Panthers’ home stadium (Bank of America Stadium). I was there for the South Carolina game. I didn’t get to talk to the coaches, but it was still a great game.”
The Tigers set a high bar at Memorial Stadium.
“The Clemson visit was probably my best visit,” Barney stated. “I love Clemson. Coach (Mike) Reed, their DB coach, he is a good guy. They were making me feel comfortable. The game was good, and the fans were good, everything was great.”
No new visits have been set, but another mix of SEC and ACC trips are in the works.
“I am looking forward to getting to Georgia Tech, Tennessee, and FSU,” Barney said.
