A mismatch nightmare for defenders is heading to the collegiate level in 2024, one defensive coordinators are happy to put off for another year. Before questions in next level meeting rooms are asked “who is going to guard Amir Jackson”, Georgia high school squads still have to find a way to stop the Portal receiving talent.
Stretching the tape at 6-foot, 5-inches, weighing 220 pounds, Jackson is as big if not bigger than most linebackers and is a towering presence against safeties and corners. The four-star tight end/receiver is credited with leading his Panthers’ squad in receptions (22), receiving yards (428), and receiving scores (4) last fall. Offensive coordinators are loving him placing 22 scholarship opportunities down.
Jackson listed the teams in heavy contact, “Florida, Miami, Auburn, Georgia, and Georgia Southern.”
Spring trips were taken to Georgia, Florida, Miami, Auburn, Troy, and Alabama. The time in Tuscaloosa was covered.
“It was good,” Jackson shared. “I went to watch them practice, it was high energy and electrified. I liked it. I thought it would be different with coach (Nick) Saban. With coach Saban, I thought it would be all serious but there were moments where he was interacting with the players.”
The atmosphere turned a little more to the serious side when talking with coach Saban and tight ends coach Joe Cox.
“I talked to coach Cox and coach Saban; I talked to coach Saban in his office,” Jackson stated. “Coach Cox was with me all day up until practice.”
The atmosphere on The Plains was different, but not necessarily bad different.
“It wasn’t like the other schools, it was different,” Jackson said. “They offered me, and then kind of went on about their day. It was something different. I liked Auburn.”
The trip with the Tigers is getting backed by an official visit.
“I am going to see Florida, Miami, FSU, Auburn, and I am thinking about Alabama and Georgia,” Jackson shared.
Jackson’s interest in the three Sunshine State teams was detailed.
Florida: “With Florida, it is the environment and their coaches. They interact with me and have fun. Coach (Russ) Callaway (TE) hits me up every day and makes sure I am good. The school I pick will be one where I feel at home, that is why they are on the list.”
Florida State: “At first, I had no interest in FSU, but my uncle is a big fan. He was telling me about everything. I went to their spring game, took the tour; you have to love it in Tallahassee. It is cool and fun. I can see myself playing there. Coach (Mike) Norvell is a good dude.”
Miami: “With coach (Cody) Woodiel (QCA), I can talk about anything with him. He came to see me not too long ago. With him and head coach Mario Cristobal, you feel at home there.”
Having the backyard Bulldogs in the mix, Jackson shared his thoughts on Georgia.
“Coach (Kirby) Smart, he is a good guy,” Jackson said. “Coach “Hart” (Todd Hartley – TE), I talk to him every day. Georgia is a place where you want to be.”
