The college football recruiting trail is full of twists and turns where the tea leaves point in one direction but reality leads in another. Holding 21 offers, Devin Collier (5-11, 200) had his list of suitors narrowing the field to Duke, Georgia Southern, Memphis, Minnesota, and South Florida. Saturday night, the Class of 2024 three-star defensive back flipped the script committing to Clay Helton’s Eagles.
The signs pointed to a possible Blue Devils connection after an official trip Durham, but Georgia Southern has something in Statesboro other programs don’t.
“The recruiting process with Georgia Southern was pretty good,” Collier said. “I really liked the school, and my auntie lives down there. I wanted to stay close to home. When they offered, I knew I had to check them out.
“They have a new staff. When coach (Darius) Eubanks got there (Liberty), I already had a connection with him, I knew I had to go down there.”
Collier continued speaking about his bond with Georgia Southern’s staff, “What really got me leaning towards them, they have a great atmosphere, I felt at home, and I know I can help change the program. When coach Helton talked about what he is doing there and the changes he is making, I knew I wanted to be a part of it.”
Eagles’ defensive coordinator Brandon Bailey already has plans for Collier’s talents.
“They will use me more as a nickel or as a safety, I have the speed and size,” Collier stated. “I will mostly be at those spots. They did say I may be used some at running back.”
The last-minute summer visits held in July proved to be fruitful for Collier and Georgia Southern.
“I committed last weekend when I was there on Saturday,” Collier said. “I committed to coach Eubanks, coach Bailey, and coach Helton. I talked to them, finalized my commitment, and let them know I really wanted to go there.”
The opportunity to be a student-athlete with the Eagles is one Collier takes seriously.
“It was great,” Collier shared. “Just going to the school, being able to take my athletic abilities there and to a place where my mom is not worrying about me… and my parents do not have to pay for my college; whatever I can to help my family and repay them I will do. Going to Georgia Southern is a huge factor.”
Collier’s Lee County (Leesburg, Ga.) squad start their 6A schedule on Friday, Aug. 18 taking on Warner Robins at home.
