Cincinnati, Louisville, South Florida, Memphis, and Ole Miss were in a tight recruiting war trying to land Maurice Davis (6-4, 215). The state of Georgia three-star defensive end out of Dougherty High School took paid for trips with the Cardinals, Bulls, and Rebels announcing his next level landing spot is in Oxford on Saturday.
Ole Miss defensive line coach Randall Joyner was able to establish an early relationship with Davis working that to the goal of a verbal commitment.
“The first time I talked to their coaches, when they called, we talked about school and stuff like that,” Davis said. “When I first visited there, it was a cool place to be. I toured the campus, and we talked; it was a good talk. After that, they stayed in contact with me.
“During the official visit this summer, that determined everything. I talked with the players there and saw off-campus stuff. They have good food off-campus. Coach Joyner made a presentation to me as an early enrollee covering through my time there up to leaving to go to the NFL.”
The tradition at Ole Miss and coach Joyner’s developmental track record were tipping points for Davis.
“The history they have and coach Joyner telling me about my favorite players and his work at Ohio State,” Davis shared. “Every time I was with him, he was showing me new things. I knew he could develop me as a player. He has worked with the top guys in the NFL and college football, and they still come to work out with him.”
When Davis let his intentions be known to the staff, they were happy they landed one of their prized targets.
“They were happy, everybody was happy,” Davis stated. “The linebackers coach, coach (Pete) Golding (DC), told me welcome to the family. For me, it felt pretty good. Now I can focus on one school.”
A date has not been set yet, but Davis wants to return to Oxford this season for an early SEC showdown.
