Teams have set 22 scholarship opportunities down at Maurice Davis’s doorstep in the hopes of signing the impact edge rusher. The recruiting process is still wide open for the Dougherty High School (Albany, Ga.) three-star defender, but three teams have scheduled officials with Davis (6-4, 215).
Hang around Davis anytime throughout the week and you will see his phone light up frequently. There are some college representatives you are almost guaranteed to see call or text.
“South Florida, Louisville, Cincinnati, Ole Miss, App State (Appalachian), and FAU (Florida Atlantic) are reaching out the most,” Davis stated.
Two spring visits were taken to Ole Miss and Florida State, the time in Oxford was covered.
“It went pretty well,” Davis said. “I love their coaching staff.”
Davis continued, “They had a meeting, I sat in the meeting about what they are supposed to do with their assignments; their coach was bringing the energy. At practice, they did individuals, 11-on-11, and the one-on-ones.”
A return to Tallahassee may happen soon, although no date has been set. Davis shared his interest in the Seminoles, “Florida State’s head coach Mike Norvell, he is different from everyone else. He interacts with everyone, and he brings the energy. He makes you want to be a Seminole.”
Three trips on the colleges’ dimes have been secured.
“Louisville June 9-11, Ole Miss June 16-18, and South Florida June 22-25,” Davis stated.
Davis gave his thoughts on each program and why they are among his favorites.
Louisville: “Louisville, they stay in touch with me. Everything I send them, they coach me up, tell me what I am doing right or wrong. They are teaching me what they are doing there and how their defense runs.”
Ole Miss: “Coach (Randall) Joyner (DL), I feel like he is that guy. Looking at developing a player, I feel like he can do that. He can develop me into the player I want to be.”
South Florida: “South Florida, I love the vibe there. The environment outside of the school, their coaches, their linebackers coach (Chad Creamer) is a good coach and so is all the other defensive line coaches. They all stay in touch; the entire staff wants me there. Even their head coach (Alex Golesh) stays in touch with me.”
There is a potential for other official visits to be set, but a commitment date is in mind.
“I want to commit in July, by the end of July before the season so I can play my season,” Davis said. “I want to leave in January. I am planning on committing around the 25 or 26th.”
