Being a running back or receiver at the 5A classification in Louisiana is no fun, and safety Kaine Williams is the reason why. The 6-2, 205-pound, head hunter comes to the party with punishment to hand out in the box and delivers his own brand of torture to receivers and quarterbacks deep. The John Ehret High School standout did his all for the Patriots in the 2019 season tallying 50 tackles with 10 passes broken up, picked off four, and jarred loose the pigskin three times; he even spent time at quarterback and receiver on his way to All-District and second team All-State honors. Now over 20 top college programs are after Marrero’s four-star Class of 2021 can’t miss prospect.

In an RNG exclusive interview, Williams goes deep on his junior campaign with an update on his recruiting process and upcoming visits.

Interview

Kaine, when you take the field for a game, you take it with an attitude. What motivates you to play at such an elite level each time out?

“My dad passed in 2016, I play for my family. When I was at the Bama camp over the summer, my sister died. I play for them.”

That is heartbreaking. I’m sorry for your losses.

“Thank you.”

I didn’t mean to start off on a bad note or on a downer.

“That’s okay.”

With your cover skills, you play deep like a smooth centerfielder.

“Yes.”

How did that part of your game further develop during your junior year?

“During my sophomore year, we had Devante at linebacker, I did not have to come down that much. Our defensive line was playing at a high level, all I had to do was play the ball. I didn’t have to come down as much. I had a lot of experience at that, playing the ball last season. Playing 7v7 and going to camps, all that helped with my cover skills in zone and man.”

Against run-heavy teams the coaches drop you down in the box where you become an extra linebacker. How did that part of your game improve throughout the 2019 season?

“We did it some this past season, we will be doing it more. When I did it, I was always in the action. I read everything correctly.”

Of all the games played last season, which was your top performance?

“I’ll say Round 1 of the playoffs against Captain Shreve, even though we lost. I had two forced fumbles, some PBUs, three big hits, and 9- to 10 tackles.”

Are there any new positions you may add to your list of responsibilities in 2020?

“Yeah, I will be playing more quarterback this year. I played quarterback in one game last season and I played receiver against U-High (University Lab). I will play quarterback and receiver more this year.”

Are you excited about playing quarterback during your senior year?

“Yes, sir. I will do what is best for the team to win.”

What are you working on this offseason with your overall game?

“My speed. I am doing a lot speed training.”

Going into recruiting, how many offers are you holding?

“I have 24 or 25 offers.”

Williams’ Offer Sheet: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Auburn, Colorado, Florida, Florida State, Houston, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Miami, Mississippi State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss, SMU, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Tennessee, Texas, Texas A&M, Tulane, UNLV, and Virginia

Over the last few months, have you taken any unofficial visits?

“Yes, sir. I went to some games during the season. I went to Alabama, LSU, Texas A&M, and Mississippi State.”

How did the Alabama trip go?

“It was great. I talked to the coaches during the visit. I took a tour over the summer when I visited then. I went to their spring game the year before, but this was my first game against someone; it was great.”

And the trip to Baton Rouge, how did that go?

“It was great. I talked to Coach O (Ed Orgeron – head coach). They showed a lot of love.”

What about the A&M visit?

“It was good. They have good vibes there, it felt kind of like home.”

Do you plan on visiting any teams coming up?

“I am going to Alabama on March 7, in April I am going to FSU, and I am going to Florida on April 4, if I do not take the ACT that day.”

Given your recruiting status, I’m guessing a lot of programs are hoping for a commitment from you sooner than later. Have you started thinking about a commitment date?

“Yes. I will probably commit at the end of the spring or before our season in August.”

Are you competing in any other varsity sports with the Patriots?

“I am running track. We have been practicing; we have our first meet in March.”

Which events are you running this year?

“The 4×4 and 4×2, and I will do the open 200.”

Kaine, it was great covering all this ground with you today. Good luck with your upcoming visits and track season.

“Thank you.”
