A couple of transitions are underway for Tyson Craig. The Class of 2025 prospect spent the past couple of seasons as a quarterback and defensive back with Georgia’s Archer High School but a greater focus is coming. When the lights shine bright this fall on Friday nights, Craig (5-10, 175) will be putting his full attention at corner for Hebron Christian Academy (Dacula).
Craig spoke about his time on the field last fall with the Tigers.
“It went well,” Craig said. “I started out at quarterback, but I feel that I am more of a defensive back, so I switched over. From there, I had a good season.”
Preparing to execute a Cover 2 defense with Hebron, Craig covered his offseason focus on technique.
“I am mainly working on my press technique, that needs some work, and my off-man technique,” Craig stated.
Craig continued talking about the strengths to his game on the island, “I am a physical cornerback. I do get in the receiver’s face to make sure it is not an easy catch. Also, I read routes well. I can tell what the receiver will do before it happens.
“This offseason I have improved at staying square in my back pedal, not getting out too fast, reading hips, and tracking their shoulder.”
Extra time on the field was spent this spring playing 7-on-7 with Top Threat and TSP.
“It went well,” Craig shared. “We did get close in every tournament; we’d always finish like third. I feel I did well. I got a lot of work in at nickel; guarding bigger receivers, that helps me at corner.”
The chance to shine at college camps this summer is already underway.
“I have camped at Mercer and Valdosta,” Craig said. “The Mercer camp was good. I feel that I had a good 40-time (4.6). I did well during the one-on-ones and position drills.”
The camp performance in front of college coaches at Valdosta went even better, and with a consistent 40-yard dash time.
“It went well,” Craig stated. “I ran a 4.6 there too. I did better during the one-on-ones at Valdosta.”
There will be more opportunities to display the skills to top college coaches in the coming weeks.
“I know for sure I will be at West Georgia on Wednesday, Florida State on Sunday, and I may be attending Clemson’s three-day camp,” Craig shared. “I will also camp at Duke, Georgia, Wake Forest, and Virginia Tech.”
