When you are playing as well as Samuel Mitchell IV (6-5, 210) is, there is no need to wait until the end of the season to bestow honors. The 2025 Pembroke Pines Charter (Fla.) talent has been a whirlwind of activity in the opposition’s backfield earning multiple Player of the Week honors. The recognition is bringing next level attention.
Curious how Mitchell can take over a game? Against Taravella (Coral Springs), Mitchell registered six tackles, five for a loss that included four sacks, and seven QB hurries while forcing four fumbles with a fumble recovery.
Stats through five games for the Jaguars’ standout: 30 tackles, 11 tackles for a loss, nine sacks, 17 QB hurries, a pick-six, seven passes defensed, and five forced fumbles.
Mitchell covered his play on the field and the Jaguars’ 5-3 start against 3M competition.
“My season is going great so far,” Mitchell said. “I am leading my county in sacks right now. I’m averaging around three sacks per game. I was named the South Florida Defensive Player of the Week and the Broward Player of the Week; it is going well. I am helping my team out.”
More details to Pembroke Pines’ defense were provided, “We are in a 4-man front, but we play in a 3-4 a lot. I am pressuring the QB, I have 17 hurries right now. I am getting in the backfield causing disruption. They also have me playing offense; I’m playing receiver too.”
Focusing on his moves, footwork, and get-off, Mitchell spoke about his skillset gains.
“From last year to this year, I have gotten bigger, faster, and stronger, and I have gotten a lot better,” Mitchell stated. “The big improvement from last year, I have become more of a team leader on and off the field.”
The breakthrough season has caught the attention of Miami, Florida International, Florida Atlantic, Coastal Carolina, and Mercer.
“I have visited FAU and FIU,” Mitchell shared. “I went to UM about three weeks ago when they played Bethune-Cookman.”
The time with the Owls in Boca Raton was updated.
“FAU was good,” Mitchell said. “I spoke with their defensive line coach (Roosevelt Maggitt). He loves what he sees in me. I also spoke with their head coach (Tom Herman) and director of recruiting (Matt Wiesner).”
Mitchell added, “We toured the school, we walked around the campus, we ate with the recruits, and watched the game. Their coach asked for my film, he said he loves what he sees and will keep a good eye on me.”
The Panthers did not disappoint.
“FIU was good,” Mitchell shared. “I loved it. One of my cousins (Kejon Owens) plays running back there; that is another good contact I have. Seeing their environment and how they play was electrifying. Their coach contacts me every day. My head coach said they really want to offer you; I am on their strong side. I think they are waiting until my season is over. Hopefully I get the offer.”
Being on the Hurricanes’ board was a great surprise for Mitchell.
“It went great,” Mitchell stated. “They loved my height, size, and build. One of their coaches also said they are highly recruiting me; I didn’t know that. I was surprised when he said that.”
A two-sport athlete, Mitchell is also starting to get looks on the hardwood.
“I’m being recruited a little bit for basketball; FAU is really on me,” Mitchell said.
