How NSD 2015 went for Stanford recruit Brian Chaffin

An inside look at National Signing Day for one Cardinal

Stanford may have 22 commitments to their 2015 recruiting class but an argument could be made about which soon to-be Cardinal football player is the most excited about heading to Palo Alto.

The Charlotte Christian center had double-digit scholarship offers but once committed to Stanford on June 16, 2014 that commitment never once waivered.

After a hectic Wednesday Brian took time to answer a couple of questions about his signing day along with insight to his thoughts and emotions behind taking the next big step in life.

Brian, when National Signing Day finally came, what thoughts and emotions went through your head leading up to the moment you signed your LOI?

“A couple of things went through my mind. You’re excited because you worked so hard for this moment and then anxious to get it over with because once you’ve signed all of the craziness with signing day is all over. Once I signed I knew I could start looking forward to the next step in my life.”

When you finally signed your LOI and faxed it in, describe how you felt at that moment.

“Signing it made it realistic. When you see the fine print on the LOI it makes it a little more real. I started to realize the commitment I was making in a whole other way. I wanted to be the first Stanford commit to turn in his LOI. I got up early and was the first Class of 2015 Stanford commitment to turn in his LOI. That was a big deal for me. It was important for me to do that.”

Did any schools make a last ditch effort to flip you? If so, who?

“All the schools knew where I was going. Some were trying to flip me over the summer but nobody tried to flip me last minute.”

Looking at the class that was signed, how do you feel about your fellow signees?

“I’m really fired up. We got a lot of playmakers, a lot of speed, a lot guys that have great physicality, smart players – I think we will gel together well. I think we have a great group of guys that will be able to contribute early and often at Stanford if needed. We’re going to be a great class. I’m really excited.”

Which players in your signing class or guys already on the team are you eager to meet and eager to practice against?

“I’m looking forward to going up against some of the defensive tackles on the team and some of the defensive linemen Stanford signed. We have a lot of good guys. It will be fun to go against all of those guys.”

Do you know who will be your roommate when you get to campus?

“At Stanford they make you room with a general education student. I have no idea who my roommate will be yet.”

When do you report to campus?

“I report on June 20. I have to be on campus by then.”

When do you get a playbook to start going all the new materials you’ll have to commit to memory before summer camp?

“They’ve sent me a playbook along with a bunch of other stuff to look at like nutrition guidelines. Early next week we’ll get more of that kind of stuff along with some instructional videos and workout guidelines to help build you the way they want to build you.”
