Sometimes players make it extremely difficult for the haters to hate. After what Quinn Murphy did on the field during his freshman season, it is hard to do anything but acknowledge the rise of another elite Texas gunslinger. The 2026 quarterback commanded the field for Austin’s Regents High School earning offers and a long list of interested collegiate parties that spans the country.
Freshmen are not supposed to look this good executing an offense. Murphy threw for 2,406 yards hitting 67 percent of his attempts covering 2,406 yards. Even more impressive, he had a 33 touchdown to three interception ratio. Piling on, his Knights squad posted an 11-1 record. Adding to it, he was 5-10 last season sprouting to 6-2, 180 pounds, this spring.
Murphy spoke about the style of offense he executes with the Knights, “We use three or four receivers with a receiving tailback. We are 50-50 run and pass. Our run game was strong last season, so was our passing game. On second and long or third and long we did well. We excelled getting the ball downfield.”
Getting ready for his sophomore campaign, Murphy covered his off-season workouts.
“I’m growing fast,” Murphy stated. “I was 5-10 at the start of last year; I am supposed to be 6-4 or 6-5 when I am done growing. My bones are stretching and moving. I am keeping up with my agility and keeping my twitch up to par. I’m developing strength in the lower body; that’s what throws the ball. This off-season I have been grinding working on my speed, agility, and lower body strength.
“I am also working on different arm releases. The deeper we go in the playoffs, the better the defenses get. Sometimes I have to throw around them. I have been working on throwing at 90- and 45-degree angles. I am working on all throws for the games, so it is like in slow motion when it happens.”
College coaches are responding to Murphy’s growth on the gridiron. UNLV, UTSA, and Louisville have offered. There is a really long list of teams showing interest.
“There are about 40 teams,” Murphy said. “Alabama, Nebraska, Texas A&M, LSU, South Carolina, Texas, Oklahoma, Florida, North Carolina, Oklahoma State, Tennessee, Arkansas, Texas Tech, Wisconsin, and Virginia Tech.”
The Gamecocks reached across the Mississippi River getting Murphy on campus this spring.
“My first visit was to South Carolina, it was a great experience,” Murphy shared. “I really liked it. Their facilities and coaches are great. They are showing a lot of interest. I am going back to South Carolina this summer to throw for their coaches.
“About a week ago, I visited UTSA. The coaches there are great. I sat down with coach Sean Davis (QB). We watched film, and he offered me; that was great.
Mixing in opportunities to throw for coaches at camps paired with a visit, Murphy has a busy summer ahead.
“I am going to Texas Tech, revisiting UTSA, Alabama, UT (Texas), Michigan, Nebraska, Texas A&M, LSU, and South Carolina,” Murphy said. “I am going the night before getting to look around the facility and then to the camp the next day.”
