Watching game film on 2025 quarterback Caleb Matthews, it is obvious, he’s good and the best is yet to come. It doesn’t take long watching Matthews’ (6-2, 185) film to understand how talented he is and how well he can move an offense down the field. The ball goes out hot from different angles and on a line but with touch. Flush him out left or right, he has the mobility to beat you with his legs and the headiness to keep his eyes downfield looking for the big play. Next level scouts are now catching on to what the Justin Garza High School prospect can do.
The sophomore season was complete with 2,228 passing yards posting 26 scores on the big board through 11 games. When given green patches, Matthews took it for 241 yards with five trips into the end zone off 67 totes.
The rising talent spoke about the Guardians’ offense, “We run a Spread-RPO (run-pass option) style offense, a college style offense. Our offense helps get me ready for the next level.”
Working within the scheme, Matthews explained how his talents fit the system.
“I feel like my strengths, I feel that I do everything well,” Matthews said. “I am well rounded. I can make all the throws and make plays with my legs.”
Working with QB coach Sam Fisher at Throw to Win, Matthews detailed what he’s working on this spring.
“This offseason I am big in the weight room,” Matthews stated. “On the field, I am working on everything. I am working on my speed, agility, and my mechanics. I am always working on getting better.”
Matthews continued, “My biggest growth this off-season has been the mental part. I am able to see the defense faster and I am better at picking up on tendencies.”
The work on the field is attracting a crowd.
“Fresno State, Cal, San Jose State, Michigan State, Hawaii, Oregon, Washington, Washington State, Oregon State, San Jose State, Cal, and UNLV are showing interest,” Matthews shared.
USC and Fresno State welcomed Matthews to campus. Insight into both visits were given.
Fresno State: “It was cool. I watched practice, I got to see how they practice. It was a cool experience. One of my friends is in the running as a starting QB; that was pretty cool to see.”
USC: “That was a very cool visit. I liked it a lot. I got to tour the facilities and the stadium. All the history that has happened there was cool.”
Three more visits are lining up on the schedule for Matthews.
“I am visiting San Jose State this weekend, and I am going to Oregon in June,” Matthews said. “Oregon hasn’t given me an exact date for that visit. I will visit Washington, probably in June so I don’t have to fly up, back down, and up again.”
Matthews shared his enthusiasm for the San Jose State trip, “They are a California team with a lot of Fresno guys go there; I am excited to see what they are about it.”
