The future is really-really bright for Class of 2021 defensive back Anthony Beavers Jr. The Serra-Gardena standout smacked around opposing Division I California competition during the 2018 season coming up with 70 tackles, 19 solo, one tackle for a loss, one interception, three passes broken up, and one forced fumble in stats posted through nine games. The 6-2, 190-pound, safety/linebacker hybrid is now very popular on the recruiting trail with 12 offers extended and a line of suitors taking a hard look at the four-star talent.
In a Recruiting News Guru stylized interview, I sat down with one of the nation’s best defensive backs out of the sophomore class talking about his season, offseason goals, and recruiting process.
Interview
Anthony, you were all over the field as a safety this season showing your playmaking skills while using great discipline within the scheme. How were you used within the defense throughout the 2018 season?
“This year I was at boundary safety. I covered tight ends and was in the box as a hybrid safety.”
How did your game develop and grow as a safety?
“I learned how to read offenses better. Reading linemen, that was the biggest thing. Learning their pressure points on the hands that they give off pre-snap – a lot of reading guard and tackles so I could make plays.”
What do you consider to be the strengths of your game as a defender?
“I think before I react, I am smart player. I feel that I am great with my open-field tackling and tackling in space. I can cover, I can cover slot as well.”
The offseason is here, what do you plan on working on with your game over the next few months?
“This offseason, my plan is to strengthen my hips, get faster, improve my agility, and I will be running track again. I want to come back next season more explosive.”
It might be too early to know, but will you stay at safety next season or might you play another or multiple positions?
“I will be playing multiple positions. I know I am going back to offense playing receiver.”
Are you staying at your hybrid safety role on defense?
“Yes, sir.”
I know you have blown up on the recruiting trail with offers. How many do you have now?
“I have 12 offers.”
Which programs were the last couple to offer you?
“Georgia and BYU.”
Beavers’ offer sheet: Utah, Arizona State, Florida, Colorado State, BYU, Idaho State, Oregon State, Oregon, Nebraska, South Carolina, Georgia, Nevada
Nice. Which schools are showing recruiting interest but have not offered yet?
“UCLA, Texas, Fresno State, Arizona, and Tennessee are all showing interest.”
Have you had a chance to take any unofficial visits yet?
“Yes. I have been to UCLA, USC, and Texas.”
How did the UCLA visit go?
“It was pretty good. I spoke to a lot of coaches, and got a feel for the game in the Rose bowl.”
And the USC visit, how did that go?
“It was pretty good as well. I went with Max Williams, he had committed a couple of days before the visit. I went with my teammates and enjoyed the game.”
What about Texas, how did that visit go?
“Texas was amazing. That was my first time seeing 100,000 fans in a stadium. It was a different atmosphere. I am appreciative to have experience it.”
Do you have any planned visits coming up?
“Yes. I am planning on visiting Oregon and Oregon State. With my 7v7 team, Premium, we are going to Texas to visit several schools – TCU, Texas, and Baylor. We are also going to Arizona and Arizona State.”
You mentioned track earlier, which events will you compete in this year with track?
“I will compete in the 100 and 200 meters.”
Anthony, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with your offseason workouts and on the 7v7 circuit.
“Thank you.”
