Regardless of the down and distance, or which side of the ball for Arcadia is on the gridiron, Class of 2021 athlete Trey Brown had a way to be part of the action. The 6-3, 205-pound, outside linebacker tore it up against the run and the pass racking up 77 tackles, 30 of the solo variety, with 31 tackles for a loss, 13 sacks, and three forced fumbles. On offense, Brown blocked against the run and opened up the Titans’ passing offense with 24 receptions for 439 yards posting five scores on the big board.

Three-star recruiting status and 12 scholarship offers have come Brown’s way, along with 2019 postseason honors: 4A Arizona Tight End of the Year, first team All-Region defensive lineman, and first team All-State Defensive Lineman and Tight End. Adding to Brown’s impressive resume, he is a two-sport athlete bringing his skills to the hardwood and gets it done in the classroom with a 3.1 GPA and a 21 scored on the ACT.

In Brown’s first interview with RNG, he covers ground on his dual-roles for the Titans and gives insight to his recruiting options.

Interview

Trey, you were a terror coming off the edge for the Titans last season using a mix of speed and power to create chaos in the opposition’s backfield. How did you see your overall talents improve as a defender in 2019?

“After my sophomore year I looked at my tape and critiqued it. There was not that much speed or twitch off the edge from me. I worked last offseason on being faster and on my get off. I see myself now as a defender as being quick off the ball, explosive, and creative with my pass rush moves.”

The stat line you produced on defense was fantastic. How were teams scheming against you last season?

“I remember one game, against Mesquite, they had a tackle and a wing on me; I was doubled most of the game. Double-teams, that is one thing I need to work on that will come with my strength. Two-on-one was tough. Double-teams was a game plan I faced, and teams running the other way.”

Your speed has to give tackles fits; about how many false starts did you create last season?

“I think about four or five, I got some of them twitching. I like that, I know when I am in their head.”

Not to be outdone, but you got to show more of your athletic talents on offense especially as a receiving threat. How did that part of your game go during your junior campaign?

“I think it added a lot of versatility to my game. Before that I was seen as a defensive player. Most people do not know that up until middle school I played offense. That was something I wanted to do my junior year. I feel that I showed my versatility and how athletic I am even more on offense last season.”

Do you have a favorite position?

“No, I don’t. I love being on the field. My dad has always said to do what you do. He has been around the game so long, he has taught me that.”

Once the 2020 season comes along, what roles will you be playing for Arcadia?

“I am playing more off the ball this season, still rushing the passer but dropping back more. On offense, I am still playing that receiver and tight end role. On defense, I will be dropping more and covering the tight end; that is something I want to show with my game this season.”

Are you working on any new pass rush moves this offseason?

“Yes. I am working on my strength pass rushing moves working in power and bull-rush moves. That is my next step, and it all starts in weight room with a lot of training.”

Let’s keep with that. What all are you working on this offseason overall?

“I want to get stronger and faster. This spring I have been working in the weight room trying to get stronger. My dad has always told me I have the tools, it is about sharpening them.”

If the college camp season happens, are there any college camps you may attend?

“I am looking at Wisconsin and Colorado, that’s all I have planned camp wise for now.”

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Arizona, Boise State, and Oregon State.”

How high is that offer total?

“I have 12 offers.”

Brown’s Offer Sheet: Colorado State, Eastern Washington, Georgetown, Montana State, Nevada, New Mexico, Northern Arizona, San Diego State, Tulane, UNLV, Utah State, and Washington State

Dating back to the start of the 2019 season, have you taken any college visits?

“I took a visit to Boulder, spent some time there, saw the campus and saw them play Arizona. I also took a visit to Arizona to see a game.”

How did the visit to Boulder go?

“It was really good. It was nice; they have a beautiful campus. I like it up there.”

And being a hometown team, how did the Arizona visit go?

“It was pretty cool too. I liked the experience. That was my first time there, it was really cool.”

Again, once things open back up, are there any planned trips on your calendar?

“I know I will get to Washington State, they want me up there; that will be one of my first visits. And also, a trip to Arizona. I want to meet the staff and all. Colorado State and San Diego State are two other visits I would like to take.”

Trey, I appreciate your time today and wish you luck with the rest of your workouts this spring.

“Thank you.”
