On the field and in the classroom, Class of 2019 quarterback Greyson Tackett has everything spinning his way. The 6-2, 211-pound, signal-caller ended his junior year completing 74 of 122 passes for 1,431 yards with 21 touchdowns going up on the board while leading Robinson High School to a 13-1 season. Tackett’s size, arm, and ability to accurately sling the pigskin is attracting college scouting attention while his 3.7 GPA and 30 scored on the ACT are making said attention a serious interaction. Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, Stanford, TCU, Baylor, Florida, and Oklahoma are just a few of the schools that have traveled to Little Rock to see Tackett throw this spring.
After back-to-back weekends competing at the Elite 11 Regional in Dallas and at the Under Armour All-American Camp in Chicago, I sat down for a catch-up interview with Tackett covering his camps, spring ball, and recruiting interest.
Interview
Greyson, how are your offseason workouts coming along?
“We finished our first spring workout Monday. This spring, we’ve been lifting mostly while doing some quarterback and receiver stuff in the morning. Everything is going well. We are just starting to put pieces together, but everything is flowing well right now.”
If you will, tell where your skillset was at by the end of your junior year and which areas of your game have improved from there over the offseason?
“My arm strength has gotten a lot better. I have also gotten faster and quicker, especially with my lateral quickness. I am reading defenses quicker than last year. I have improved in all facets of the game this offseason.”
Have you tweaked anything with your technique or throwing motion this spring?
“Yes, sir. I have been working on making more efficient moves. I was a little jerky at the end of last year.”
I got to see you throw at the Dallas Nike Opening Regional, it looked like you had the wing warmed up and ready to go. How do you feel you did at that camp?
“I think I did really well. I think that I was in contention for the top spot. I was told I was the best QB out there, but that is not up to me to decide. The Opening combine and all the camps I have attended have gone well. There are only a couple throws that were not great at these camps.”
Which areas of your skills did you get to showcase at the Nike camp?
“I showcased everything, my arm strength and accuracy. I did well in the one-on-ones against the defensive backs at both camps. I did well in the footwork and pocket drills.”
On Sunday, you competed at the Under Armour All-American Camp in Chicago, how did that go?
“It went well. It didn’t rain, which was great. It was a great day to throw the ball. I thought I did well. There was a lot of great competition there. I did well. I can only think of two throws that were not what I wanted it to be.”
Do you have any other camps set upcoming?
“Yes, sir. This summer I am planning on attending camps with Vanderbilt and Stanford. Those two are for sure. There are others I am thinking about going to but I am going to wait to see how the rest of the spring goes.”
You have an offer from Seton Hill, which other schools are showing recruiting interest?
“Vanderbilt and Mississippi State have stopped by – want to keep in touch. Stanford, ULL (Louisiana), and FIU are all showing interest as well.”
Which other schools have come by Robinson to meet you or see you throw?
“We’ve had a lot of schools come by this spring. Arkansas, TCU, Baylor, Missouri State, Hendrix, Cornell Florida, and Oklahoma have all come by so far. There are others, but I cannot think of them all right now.”
Which schools have you visited in 2018?
“I have visited Holy Cross, Boston College, UMass, SMU, and Harvard.”
Do you have any planned you may take not associated with a camp?
“I may visit UT-Martin and maybe Murray State. Cornell wants me to come by this summer as well.”
You mentioned the Senators started spring ball on Monday and are working some kinks out. It is very early, but how does the team look overall this offseason?
“We look really good right now. We have some things to hammer out, some small kinks here and there. Our O-line looks good, as does our receivers and defensive backs. It has been hot outside. That is good for us to experience the heat. We will get better with each spring practice.”
Are you adding any new wrinkles to your game within the offense this spring?
“Yes, sir. We have some more RPOs we will run, building on top of our existing plays. We are adding some new routes and hot reads as well.”
Going forward, what will be the focus of your workouts in the pocket?
“My focus is speeding up my reads, quicker reads, quicker transitions to and from different receivers, better pocket management, and being able to escape pocket when needed. My accuracy and arm strength comes with throwing the football. I am just making sure my mechanics are smooth.”
Greyson, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your spring practices.
“Thank you.”
