Entering his senior season, Trevor Gill has created a problem for himself very few are so lucky to have – really high expectations placed upon his shoulders. The home run hitting tailback burned opposing California defenses for 1,751 yards off 144 carries with 23 trips into the end zone last season as a one-two punch with fellow Class of 2019 back Kyle Bryant (151/1,707/21). When his San Fernando High School squad needed him most, the 5-8, 165-pound, play-maker tore through the playoffs netting 700 of his total rushing yards and 12 of his total touchdowns in the four-game run that concluded with a 28-21 defeat of Dorsey. Now high school football fans in the Los Angeles area, along with the Tiger faithful, want to know what the City Player of the Year will do next and if he can help bring a second consecutive state title home in 2018.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with Gill learning more about his one-cut and gone running style, his offseason workouts, and his recruiting process to date.
Interview
Trevor, you and Kyle Bryant were a lightning and lightning combo out of the backfield for the Tigers last season. Having someone like that to work with can help drive and motivate, how did Kyle’s play help you work even harder throughout the 2017 season?
“Whenever he got a long run, that pushed me to get a long run. We pushed each other to keep getting better throughout the season.”
You picked up 700 of your 1,751 yards during the playoffs as 12 of your 23 touchdowns during that stretch, what was working differently for you allowing you to be even more productive?
“Our linemen, they were working hard. Playoff football clicked for them and for me. The playoffs were different for us.”
Was there one play on your reel from last season that encapsulates your athletic talents and abilities as a running back?
“Yes. One of my runs against Arleta (playoffs), I broke a tackle and did a jump cut and was gone.”
Which game was your best last season?
“I’d say the Arleta game (won 54-0) was my best. I had 273 rush yards and four touchdowns.”
That would certainly qualify as a great game. What are the strengths of your game as a tailback?
“I slow it down, wait for the block and then go full-speed. My field vision is a strength, I had a lot of cutback runs last season. My patience waiting for the play to develop is a strength as well.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“This offseason, I am working on my hands. I will be playing some slot this year. I am also working on my footwork and some new jukes.”
Where all might you line up during the 2018 season?
“I am playing running back, slot, and on defense I am playing corner.”
Will the Tigers use you in a different way on offense during your season year?
“We will pass out of the backfield more this year trying to get a mismatch with a linebacker.”
Have you attended any camps and/or combines this offseason?
“I went to an Adidas camp, the Nike Regional, and I went to the U.S. Army All-American Camp.”
What is the best 40-yard dash time you’ve posted this offseason?
“A 4.6.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest in you?
“Army, Oregon State at slot, UCLA – they invited me to one of their practices, and Hawaii at slot.”
Which schools have come by San Fernando to meet with you or see you in practice?
“There have been a lot of schools visiting; Washington State, Arizona, Oregon, Portland State, Hawaii, UCLA, Redlands, and Nevada.”
Which schools have you visited thus far?
“I have visited Fresno State, Sacramento State, and UCLA.”
Do you have your eye on any college camps this summer?
“I am planning on camps at Redlands, Boise State, Arizona State, UCLA, and USC.”
What other sports do you compete in for San Fernando?
“Track and wrestling.”
Which events did you run this year?
“The 400, 200 and both relays.”
What is your best time in the 400?
“49.4.”
Nice. Last couple of questions. Which opposing stadium has been the most fun for you to play in during your high school career?
“The championship game at El Camino College, that was fun.”
Are you a talker on the field, or do you let your play do the talking?
“I let my play do the talking.”
What is the funniest thing an opposing player has said to you on the field during a game?
“I don’t pay attention. I don’t know. I just walk back to the huddle.”
I like that. Trevor, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your spring workouts.
“Thank you.”
