Of all team sports, football is perhaps the greatest embodiment of taking a collective unit to succeed. A singular focus on a goal by a collective group can take individuals beyond their own capabilities. When the 2017 high school football season began in Arkansas, the Charging Wildcats had heavy expectations placed upon their shoulders after a 12-1 campaign the year before ending at the hands of Fayetteville in the 7A state championship game. Instead of taking their incredible run in 2016 for granted, all the guys on North Little Rock’s roster worked even harder in the offseason with an even bigger reward by season’s end. One of the guys helping push the motto of team first to a magical season, and ready for another go, is Class of 2019 cornerback Sedrick Cain.
No matter what happens going forward for all the coaches and players on North Little Rock’s 2017 squad, each has an inspirational story. After falling short of a state title in 2016, the team regrouped for the improbable, a 13-0 season finishing ranked No. 7 in the country by MaxPreps by topping Bentonville 44-37. The offense scorched the opposition averaging 40 points per game while the defense was stifling only allowing 18 points per contest. Play after play, Cain was manning his island picking off passes, knocking away hopeful throws, and coming up in run support. The big question from the fans, can the Charging Wildcats do it again? Based on a conversation with Cain, North Little Rock is ready to hoist up another trophy.
In a Recruiting News Guru stylized interview, I sat down with one of North Little Rock’s top defenders to learn more about his game and his offseason workouts in pursuit of another Arkansas state championship.

Interview
Sedrick, what was the championship run like for you last season?
“It was a great experience knowing we gave it our all. We had a great bond. I knew I could lean on my teammates and they could lean on me to make plays.”
Of all the games played last season, which was your best?
“I’d say the championship game was my best.”
What did you do well in the championship game to make it your best?
“I had a lot of pass breakups and tackles. I almost had a pick or two.”
When do you guys start spring ball?
“We started Monday. We have practice about every other day.”
What are you focused on with your game this spring?
“I am focused on eye discipline. We play a lot of man coverage. I am working on looking at my reads and staying focused. I am also working on my explosion out of my breaks, coming up on a tackle in the flat in a cover 6 or in a zone – I am always working on that.”
What do you consider the overall strengths of your game?
“My catch-up speed is a strength. I can have separation from someone and gain it back. I’m good at reading sets. I can tell if it is a run or a pass based on their formation.”
Do you have any upcoming camps planned?
“I am planning on attending camps at SMU, Henderson, and Arkansas Tech.”
Which schools are showing recruiting interest?
“SMU, Tennessee-Martin, Bethel University, Northwestern Oklahoma State, Henderson, and Arkansas Tech are showing interest.”
Have you received an offer?
“I have an offer from Arkansas Baptist.”
After a championship run last season, how are the Charging Wildcats looking so far in practice?
“We are looking really good. I think we can be even better on defense this year. We have some good young defensive backs. I’m the oldest, so I have to help teach the young cats our defense.
Because the Charging Wildcats are the defending state champs and ended the year ranked No. 7 in the nation by MaxPreps, what kind of target will you guys have on your back in 2018?
“Everyone will come after us this year and give us their best shot.”
What does the team need to do this offseason to make another run to the title in 2018?
“Team work. That is key. We have a lot of team work, but I want us to be even better. We are looking good on offense. Our running backs are great, no worries there.”
Sedrick, thanks for your time today and good luck with spring ball.
“Thank you.”
