Watching Peter Agabe coming up through the ranks from high school ball at Orlando Christian Prep to his freshman season at ASA College (Miami), one thing he could always do well is create chaos in the opposition’s backfield. If a stop against a ball carrier was needed or hunting down a quarterback was wanted, Agabe was the man for the job. That skillset as a weakside defensive end has blossomed into a true outside linebacker in 2018 with Georgia Military Prep.
During his freshman season with ASA, Agabe ended the year with 30 tackles, 16 solo, 5.5 sacks, and five forced fumbles. The stat sheet has filled up quickly with the Bulldogs in 2018 seeing the sophomore come up with 23 tackles, seven tackles for a loss, four sacks, one pass batted down, and two forced fumbles fumble taking one back for a score through six games played.
An offer from North Carolina-Charlotte has been extended to the speedy 6-2, 215-pound, defender with interest coming in from Central Florida, Rice, Arkansas, and Texas, among others. Wanting to learn more about his recruiting process and growing abilities within the game, I sat down for a catch-up interview with Agabe.
Interview
Peter, the Bulldogs had a rough start losing the first three games but have come storming back to win three in a row. What is working well for the team during the winning streak?
“Everyone, the whole team, was in shock after the losses. We have gotten back to what we are supposed to do, our assignments and all the little things. On defense, we have been shutting down the opposing offenses.”
The defense has been salty all year only allowing 13 points per game on average, what makes your side of the ball so productive, what all are you guys doing well?
“Everyone is playing as a team, no selfish play. We are playing our gaps, playing our man with no cheating on plays looking for stats. We are being disciplined out there.”
Against ASA College (Miami), you guys won 35-7, how did the game go for you?
“It was a good game for me. Playing my friends, it was a really good game.”
The last time out the Bulldogs flattened Hocking College 65-0, was that a feast for you on defense?
“That game was a great game. Our offense did well, so did our defense. They were not a match for us. We did our thing and played football. For me, there were a lot of three-and-outs, not a whole lot going on. I did my assignments so my teammates can make plays. I was just thinking about winning the game. That is all that matters.”
Army Prep is coming up on Saturday, how will their offense challenge you?
“I don’t see them as a challenge, it just another game. They are just our next opponent. As long as we do our jobs, I know we will win.”
I’ve seen your reel, you are getting after it off the edge and overall as an outside linebacker this year. What all are you doing well on the field?
“I’m playing well at outside linebacker this year and the coaches have some special plays for me where I have my hand in the dirt. I am expanding my skills.”
What are your overall strengths?
“My strengths, I know how to rush the QB. I am good at reading my keys, tackling, doing my assignments, and my instincts and timing have improved greatly.”
What are you constantly working on every day in practice?
“In practice I work on my hand-placement and striking harder – my hand fighting. I am trying to use less of my speed and using more technique when rushing the QB. I am really mixing it all up and trying to get better all around. I am learning new moves – it is all coming together.”
Turning to recruiting, you have an offer from North Carolina-Charlotte, which schools are showing interest in you?
“Rice, Stetson, South Alabama, Arkansas, UCF, and Texas.”
Do you have any planned visits coming up?
“In November, I am visiting UNC-Charlotte.”
Great. Last question. What motivates you on the field?
“With that, I have to give a shout out to my coaches and my family for pushing me and helping me. They are what motivates me.”
Peter, great catching up with you today. Good luck on Saturday against Army Prep.
“Thank you.”
