The 2017 season was one full of improbable moments for Liberty-Eylau seeing the Leopards start off the season 1-5 before making a run at the end of the season and into the playoffs to finish 7-6. As the team bonded together and found their way on the field, an underclassman did the same pushing his game forward helping post wins on the board. Now the spotlight is on Class of 2019 athlete El-Amin Greer to see what he can do during his senior season.
Greer earned first team All-District honors in 2017 helping draw more positive attention to his Texarkana squad. When the season was over, the 6-1, 178-pound, receiver had pulled in 45 passes for 675 yards with a score against Texas 4A competition. Anticipating a big senior season from Greer, at multiple positions, I sat down for a quick one-on-one interview with the emerging talent getting insight on his game and recruiting process.
Interview
El-Amin, how did your junior season go on the field?
“It went alright. I started every game on offense, and played every snap. Next season should be even better. I will play some corner, free safety, some at linebacker and I will be back for kick and punt returns.”
You had a breakout season in 2017, what was the difference in your play from your sophomore to junior year?
“My sophomore year I was coming off an injury from the summer. I got stronger and faster my junior year. I understood the game better. More time practicing and playing the game made me wiser and stronger.”
What is one thing you are most proud of from your play on the field in 2017?
“My confidence. I learned how to hit. I was hitting harder as the season went along. I got into it more. I had 10 knockdowns.”
Which game last season was your best last year?
“In one of our district games, I had two touchdowns, 150 receiving yards, and five tackles. But, a big game for me was the Dallas Carter game in the playoffs. I had 127 yards off four catches with one touchdown.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“I am working on my strength, footwork, and getting faster off the line. With my DB work, I am working on my back pedals and getting in and out of my breaks faster. I am trying to get better overall. That will show this season. I am also running track to help with my speed.”
What goals have you sent for your senior year?
“We had a good receiving corps, but we had some seniors graduate. My stats should go up this year. My goal is 1,000 yards, 90 receptions, and I am aiming for 20 yards per catch.”
Are you playing 7v7 ball?
“I am playing with Fast Arkansas.”
How is that helping improve your game?
“It is helping me understand the game better. 7v7 ball is a faster game. It has been fun to travel around and play against different people, top teams and top kids in the nation. Playing has given me a better understanding of the game.”
Have you attended any camps this spring?
“I went to a Rivals camp in Houston last weekend on Sunday.”
How did the Rivals camp go?
“It went pretty good. It was more about names and stars than making plays. I made some good plays against the guys out there.”
Which position did you compete at for the camp?
“Receiver.”
Do you have plans for college camps this summer?
“I am planning on going to SMU and SFA (Stephen F. Austin). I will add more schools. I am planning on at least five college camps this summer.”
Which schools are showing interest in you?
“Air Force, I had a SFA Junior Day invite, Texas State, Cornell is showing a lot of interest, Brown, and Arkansas State.”
Have you taken any visits yet?
“I went to SMU for a game day visit last season.”
You mentioned track earlier, are you playing any other varsity sports?
“Basketball.”
Which events are you competing in with track?
“I transition from one week to another in three different events. My events are the 400, 4×2, 4×4, 330 hurdle, 100, and 200.”
That’s a lot. What is your best time in the 100?
“My best time in the 100 is 11.2.”
Last question. What goals have you set for yourself to accomplish before the 2018 regular season begins?
“I want to gain 15 pounds before the season begins, get a high 4.4 time on my 40-yard dash, and get my first offer.”
El-Amin, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
