Hard to not be impressed with Leroy Louis after watching his highlight reel. He was all over the field for Moreno Valley High School during the 2018 season helping the Vikings into the CIF playoffs. Before the Vikings exited the playoffs against El Rancho, Louis carried the rock 47 times for 506 yards with seven touchdowns and hauled in 38 passes for 545 yards with three more touchdowns and converted four two-point conversions. He even completed a pass for 37-yards. Now the 6-2, 170-pound, rising talent heads to the offseason to push his skillset to another level in preparation for the spring evaluation period, college camps, and a big senior season.

In an RNG exclusive interview, I was able to slow down Louis long enough for an insightful conversation covering his wide-ranging abilities and offseason workout goals.

Interview

Leroy, the Vikings made it to the playoffs this season behind an offense that put up 40 points per game on average. You were a very big part of that offense. What was working for the team as unit allowing you guys to be so successful?

“Our run game, our run game was making us successful.”

You were that true athlete on offense lining up seemingly everywhere making plays. In addition to playing receiver, where else did you line up during your junior year?

“I lined up at slot, wideout, and sometimes at quarterback in the Wildcat.”

Of all the positions you played, which is your favorite?

“My favorite is receiver and slot.”

As a receiver, which areas of your game were most improved?

“My route running improved a lot and so did my understanding of defenses. I was seeing how different linebackers and safeties were lining up against me. I was seeing the depth they had and their shading, that helped me run my routes.”

What do you consider to be the strengths of your game as a receiver?

“I get off the line very-very well. If a guy is pressing me, I can break him off the line. My height is a strength. If a corner lines up on me, we can go to a fade and I will dunk on him.”

Looking ahead to the offseason, what will be the focus on your workouts?

“My focus is working on my hands and my speed.”

Have the Vikings coaching staff talked to you about where you may play during your senior year yet?

“Not yet, but there is a good chance that I might play corner or safety next year.”

Going into recruiting. Which schools are showing interest?

“Utah, they are showing a lot of interest and on Monday I talked to New Mexico State. In the spring, Utah State, Washington, Arizona, and few others I cannot think of right now, were showing interest.”

Do you plan on playing any other varsity sports this winter or spring?

“No. My focus is on football this offseason.”

Last question. Looking back on the 2018 season, what were some of the things you learned that you will take with you that will make you a better player next season?

“That’s a good question. Some things I learned, I learned better route running and being a better leadership. Being a leader will be more important during my senior year.”

Leroy, I appreciate your time today and good luck with your offseason workouts.

“Thank you.”
