After a sophomore season filled with blistering top California competition, college football programs across the nation are keying in on Jaden Casey. The super sophomore threw for 3,393 yards with 32 touchdowns connecting on 221 of 349 passes in the process helping Calabasas High School to a 10-2 season. As the Coyotes transition from a spread attack to a multiple-base front with a pro-style base, the additional experience Casey is adding to his game is bringing scholarship offers along with it. Thus far, Arkansas, Indiana, Southern Miss, and San Jose State have offered the 6-1, 187-pound, gunslinger. In a Recruiting News Guru catch-up interview, I sat down the Los Angeles area talent to learn more about his offseason workouts and recruiting process.

Interview

Jaden, how are your offseason workouts coming along?

“They are going really well right now. I’ve gained about 15 to 20 pounds this offseason. I am lifting a lot and working with my QB coach, Rudy Carpenter. We are doing chalk talk on the board, going over coverages, mechanics, and fundamentals.”

Which areas of your skillset are you seeing the biggest growth this spring?

“I’d say, working with our new offensive coordinator, I have been working under center a lot. I will need that in my future – working the pro-style set with a tight end on the line. I am getting a better grasp of the game. I am speeding up my footwork under center, that is a big improvement. I am working on my play action, my drops, and cleaning all of that up.”

What are you focused on with your workouts as a passing quarterback?

“Last year I was trying to compete with the next quarterback, now I am competing with myself. I have a different mindset this offseason. Instead of just throwing the ball, I am understanding more of the game and why I need to make this pass or that one. I am doing a lot of mental reps with all my workouts.”

Which camps have you been to so far?

“I have attended the Nike and Rivals Three-Stripe camp.”

How did the Nike camp go for you?

“I liked it. It was fun to compete with the best. I like those camps, I like meeting new people. It is fun. You are always in season, but it is more personal in the actual season. At camps, you can bond with other guys.”

What are some of the aspects of your game you feel you showcased well at the Nike camp?

“The touch on my ball. Not everything has to be 100 miles per hour. I was hitting the receivers out there.”

Since we last spoke, you’ve shot up on a lot of recruiting boards. How many offers do you have now?

“I have four offers.

Which schools are showing interest but have not offered yet?

“Colorado, Washington may be showing most interest, Colorado State, Nebraska, Baylor, Fresno State, SMU, Washington State, Arizona State, and Arizona.”

Which schools have you visited so far?

“I have been to Fresno State and Arkansas.”

How did the Fresno State visit go?

“I went to Fresno State on Saturday (March 17). Coach (Jeff) Tedford (head coach), I really like him. Fresno State, I think, would be a really good fit for me. Coach Tedford has a great linage of quarterbacks he has coached. He knows a lot about the position. He has put a lot of QBs in the NFL. Fresno State went 1-11 in 2016 and then he took them to 10-4 last season, and they played some tough teams like Alabama and Washington. It was cool to be up there to talk to him.”

How did the Arkansas visit go (March 8)?

“It was awesome. It was different there but cool. Coach (Joe) Craddock (offensive coordinator) and Coach (Chad) Morris (head coach) are great guys. Their QB room – that was awesome. The hype about the SEC was true. I think they will get it back going for sure at Arkansas.”

What all did you do when you were in Fayetteville?

“I watched them practice and we ate at a nice Japanese restaurant. The people are so nice there. We toured the facilities and their education department. Wal-Mart is a big thing in Arkansas. Their business program is great.”

What is your lasting impression of the University of Arkansas?

“Talking to Coach Morris. I talked to him for about 15 minutes in his office. We talked about starting something at a place that is known with a good reputation. We talked about starting a new era at Arkansas.”

Did your parents like Arkansas?

“My dad went with me. My dad loved it. He loved the coaches and the hospitality. He was in the QB room with us, he was impressed.”

Do you have any other visits set?

“I am going to North Carolina and N.C. State with my QB coach the first week in April.”

Are you planning on attending any college camps?

“I am planning on going to Indiana and Fresno State in June.”

Jaden, thanks for your time today, and good luck with your upcoming visits.

“Thank you.”
