Sometimes the smallest of things, and an unlucky play, can put the brakes on a fantastic season; that thought perhaps best summarizes the sophomore campaign for Latarious “Larry” Hill. Hill was explosive out of the backfield rushing for 423 yards off 51 carries, an 8.29 yard per carry average, with two scores posted. In limited snaps on defense, Hill got nine tackles with three tackles for a loss, a sack, and one quarterback hurry for Holy Trinity Episcopal before a broken pinky limited him to five games. But those five games have made a big impact on the recruiting trail.
Hill’s size (5-10, 195), speed (4.6), and overall athleticism (two-sport standout) has led to nine offers placed before him. The Melbourne (FL) area talent already has next level options from South Carolina, Iowa State, Army, Bowling Green, Oregon State, Northern Colorado, and Morgan State, Middle Tennessee, and Tulane.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with one of Florida’s fastest rising Class of 2020 backs covering his play on the field, offseason workouts, and recruiting process.
Interview
Larry, how did your overall 2017 season go on the field?
“I think it went well. I grew up a lot from the season before. I learned more about the game.”
You are a hard-nosed runner, what are some of the other strengths of your game as a running back?
“My moves – my moves are different. My field vision is good. My cuts are what separates me from other backs.”
What are you working on this offseason?
“My speed. That is one thing I want to improve. I want to have that extra burst when I hit the sidelines. I’ve been working on my blocking and my hands. I want to be more consistent overall.”
Where all will you play on the field in 2018?
“Running back and defensive end.”
Are you excited about playing defensive end at your size?
“It is not as bad as people think. The people I go against are bigger than me, but they are slow. I use my speed and cuts against them. Normally, they cannot get their hands on me. I contain well against the run. I do my job out there.”
Have you been to any camps this offseason?
“I have been to a Mercer camp.”
How did the Mercer camp go?
“I thought it went really well. I learned a lot from the coaches. That was one of my first big camps. I learned how to control myself and be coachable at camps.”
What did you do well at the Mercer camp?
“When we did one-on-ones with the linebackers, I showed my cutting ability. It was hard for linebackers to get a hold of me.”
Have you posted a 40-yard dash this offseason?
“Yes. I think it was a 4.6.”
I know you have eight offers, which schools are showing the most recruiting interest?
“Overall, Middle Tennessee is showing a lot of interest, Iowa State is showing a lot of love, South Florida, and Wake Forest are also showing a lot of interest.”

Have you unofficially visited any schools yet?
“Yes, sir. I visited Middle Tennessee and Tennessee.”
Do you compete in any other sports for the Tigers?
“Yes, sir. I run track.”
Which events?
“The long jump and the 100.”
What is your PR in the 100?
“My best time in the 100 is an 11.6.”
How well did you do in the long jump?
“I made state for long jump.”
What was your best jump?
“19-feet, 7-inches.”
Nice. Back to some football. How are the Tigers looking in spring and summer practices?
“We are looking really good. We will be a lot better than last season. Last season we had a lot of young guys, a lot of freshmen. They played big roles last year and are maturing this year.”
What goals have you set for the 2018 season?
“I want to get 1,000 yards rushing.”
Last question. When you are away from football and working out, what are you doing this summer for fun?
“For fun – going to the beach. I like going to beach.”
Larry, thanks for your time today. Good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts and have fun at the beach this summer.
“Thank you.”
