If Class of 2020 quarterback Dylan Guerra proved anything last season, he demonstrated how much he loves picking apart defenses. The 6-1, 195-pound, gunslinger took California secondaries to the shed hitting 184 of 271 passes for 3,091 yards with 35 touchdowns while posting three rushing scores. The time put in breaking apart hopeful defenses led to an 11-3 campaign for Arcadia High School last season. With the 2019 schedule heating up, Guerra is showing his anytime any place skills with Warren High School. The Downey squad posted an impressive 44-27 win over St. Anthony in the opener with their new quarterback completing 20 of 32 passes for 399 yards with five touchdowns going up on the board.
In an RNG catch-up interview, I sat down with one of California’s more overlooked quarterback talents to learn how he is adapting to his new team and what work went into his offseason so he could continue his pillaging of defenses.
Interview
Dylan, this offseason you made the move to Warren. What type of offense are you running with the Bears this season?
“Under Coach (Kevin) Pearson, we are running a Spread getting the ball out to the receivers.”
What are some of the differences for you between Arcadia’s offense and Warren’s that will stretch you in different ways during the 2019 season?
“Some of the differences are getting the ball more to the running back and the development of the run game. After establishing the run, then we go up top to our receivers. That is one of the biggest differences.”
Which areas of your game did you focus on throughout the offseason?
“I focused on being in the classroom more to get a better understanding of the game. Going to quarterback camps this summer helped. I gained a better understanding of defenses. I am understanding what I am seeing better. My game has matured and the game has slowed down for me.”
You guys picked up an impressive 44-27 win over St. Anthony to start the schedule. How did the game go for you personally?
“It went pretty well. There is still room for improvement. We made some mistakes, but it was an exciting win. That was a great way to build confidence for all of us. On offense, we did some good things. Our defense is aggressive. We looked good.”
From last season to the first part of your senior year, where are you seeing the big improvements in your game?
“The improvements are with my training in the weight room. That has led to me becoming bigger, stronger, and faster. I can throw the ball further and with more zip. I am faster running the ball. I am a better overall athlete as a quarterback now.”
By the time the season has finished, what will you have accomplished on and off the field?
“My goals are team first goals; I want to win league for Warren. I want to bring a CIF title to Warren. I want to break as many records as I can this season helping my team win games.”
You mentioned going to camps a few minutes ago, did you go to any college camps?
“Yes. I went to a Redlands camp and an Azusa Pacific camp.”
Between the two, which was your best performance?
“I did my best at the Redlands camp. A lot of coaches liked what they saw of me at that camp. That was a good camp for me.”
Dylan, always great catching up with you. I appreciate your time and wish you and the Bears success this season.
“Thank you.”
