In the football universe, the athlete title is typically given to skill players who can line up at multiple positions on either side of the ball. Rarely, if ever, do offensive linemen get the same kind of “athlete” love despite the distinct challenges that come with the positions in the trenches. With each position along the line, the footwork and movement is different and the blocking schemes change. For an offensive coordinator to have a player that can handle multiple positions at a high level is a gift. A gift up front for Nolan Catholic this season has been the versatile play of emerging Class of 2020 lineman Sean Migliaccio.

Migliaccio is a full-time guard for the Vikings helping the offense become one of the more feared units in TAPPS. The squad has bruised and battered the opposition for an average of 42 points per game working to a 6-1 record. The gift that Migliaccio provides is the ability to also play center, a skill college coaches do not take for granted.

Throughout the 2018 season, Migliaccio has started to come into his own as a blocker filling out his frame to 6-3, 260-pounds, working his way up on the scale. In an RNG exclusive interview, I sat down with the Fort Worth area product to learn more about his skillset and the Vikings 2018 march through the schedule.

Interview

Sean, the Vikings have played really well on both sides of the ball this season. On offense, you guys have been rolling over the opposition scoring 42 points per game. What is working so well for the offense this season?

“This year, our running back corps is deep. We have an outstanding freshman Emeka Megwa running back who has stepped up and come through for us this season. Our offensive line is bigger than last year, and deeper with more depth. It has been a lot easier for us to move and run the ball and our pass protection has been much improved.”

The team suffered the first loss of the season on Oct. 5 against Bishop Lynch (48-24). How has that loss helped push the team forward for the better?

“Bishop Lynch is one of the best in state and one of our biggest rivals. That game put everything into perspective for us. It was a punch in the stomach. But, the following week we responded against Liberty. We could have played better against Liberty but we did our job. The Bishop Lynch game shows the level of play in TAPPS.”

As mentioned, you guys had a bounce-back win topping Liberty Christian 49-21, how did that game go for you personally?

“For me, I could have played better. As a unit we could have played better. We had some assignment mistakes and we gave up two sacks. We did not play well as an offensive line unit but we got the win.”

You are playing both guard and center, how is your game coming along this season as a center?

“As a center, I have not played too much there this year but I feel like I have grown a lot with my lateral speed and quickness. Playing guard has helped me with the pulling in our offense. I have improved a lot from last year. Last year, I was 220 pounds. Over the offseason I gained weight and strength, that has helped with my punch and blocking overall. My first two steps are a lot better and my leverage on blocks are better. I am getting to his chest before he gets to mine.”

What about at guard, where are you seeing the most improvements at that position?

“My weight gain had made me a better player. I am dominating at the line of scrimmage because of my improved footwork and hand-placement. My pass-set is better and I have more confidence; that has helped a lot.”

Are you guys tracking knockdowns and pancakes?

“Yes, we are tracking pancake blocks but we don’t count knockdowns.”

How many pancake blocks do you have this season?

“I have a total of 21 pancakes.”

Nice. You guys get Midland Christian on Friday, what kind of game can the fans expect in that showdown?

“We are expecting a good game. Their defensive line is very good. It will be a good game. We have been preparing throughout our bye week for them. They are coming in 7-1, we are 6-1; it will be a really good game.”

Sean, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of the season.

“Thank you.”
