For many athletes in all team sports, much of the success that is earned is all about being given an opportunity. With Class of 2020 running back Everson Bozeman, the talent has always been there it has all been about the chance to showcase his skills in a consistent manner. As the dream for all seniors sitting in his position, the 2019 season has been his to shine fast-tracking towards 1,000 rush yards, and in a hurry.
Bozeman spent much of his junior season being the do-everything athlete Venice High School needed him to be on the field. He spent time at cornerback coming up with 24 tackles with four passes defended and a pick. On offense, he posted a 7-yard per carry average taking the rock 77 times for 566 yards with seven scores posted and pulled in 10 passes for 58 yards with another touchdown. As the California high school football season gets going, Bozeman (5-8, 175) has scorched the gridiron taking the rock 43 times covering 424 yards with seven touchdowns going up on the board and has secured four passes for 20 more yards with one more score. His 9.8-yard per carry average is impressive, but the stats have a little more luster knowing all achieved in 2019 has come in just three games.
With an impressive senior season in flight, his Gondoliers team off to a 2-1 start, and college coaches starting to locate him, I sat down for a catch-up interview with the impressive scat-back.
Interview
Everson, how has your senior season started out?
“Very good. Since we lost (receivers) Chad (Johnson) and Makai (Cope) (transfers), we have been running the ball.”
What did you work on with your skillset over the offseason?
“I worked on my vision, my catching and my speed, strength, and agility.”
Where are you seeing the biggest improvements so far on the field?
“I am running the ball 10-times better now. My field vision is 10-times better now. I am taking one-cut and I’m gone – that is what I have been working on.”
Did you run a 40-yard dash this offseason, and if so, what was your fastest time?
“My fastest 40-yard dash is a laser-timed 4.5.”
Nice. Of the three games played, which one has been your best?
“I would say the Hawthorne and El Camino Real games have been my best. “
What did you do well in those games to make them your best?
“I ran the ball well. I scored five times against Hawthorne, but they called one back.”
When the season is over, what goals will you have accomplished?
“My goals are to be Top 5 in (LA) city for rushing yards. I want to rush for over 1,000 and win a City Championship.”
Which games are big ones still left on the Gondoliers schedule?
“The Newbury Park game this Friday is a big one. We still have Paramount and Palisades left to play too.”
The Panthers are 2-1, what kind of game are you expecting from them on Friday?
“They have a high-powered, fast- up-tempo offense. Their defense stacks the box, we will be challenged. I will have to do a great job picking up my blocks.”
With recruiting, which schools are showing interest?
“Kennesaw State, USC, Montana State, Colorado, Cal-Poly, Fresno State, and Oregon.”
Did you get to visit any schools over the offseason?
“I took a visit to Kennesaw State.”
How did that visit go for you?
“It was pretty cool, but it was hot and humid.”
Are there any visits coming up?
“I am planning on visiting USC soon.”
Everson, it was great catching up with you today. I wish you and the Gondoliers success this season.
“Thank you.”
