However the universe works, some of us are given more gifts than others, and when Elisha Lloyd’s gifts were handed down, he got a whole lot of them. The rising 2021 star tore apart his peer group at the freshman level running for over 1,000 yards with 26 touchdowns scored looking like a man among boys. Now, Lloyd (5-10, 160) is matriculating to Cathedral Catholic in 2018 taking his clocked, and videotaped (see below), 4.37 speed with him.
In a Recruiting News Guru exclusive interview, I sat down with the, for now, unknown star in the making ahead of a big sophomore season that will see him all over the field and at a new position – cornerback.
Interview
Elisha, you have pure speed that is a gift from above. What are some of your run times that put a number on just how fast you really are on the field?
“A year ago, at a Premium camp, I ran a 4.37. At a track meet before that, I ran an 11.2 in the 100 (meters) in the eighth grade. My goal this year is to be in high 10s on the track and run another 4.3 at a camp.”
That is impressive. Your freshman year you played running back, and you were seemingly unstoppable. Did you like playing out of the backfield during your freshman season?
“I thought it was pretty good. I liked the feeling playing in the backfield, I can see the field better. I could get in open space and provide for the team.”
Guys with blazing speed can burn out later in games, how are you building up your endurance to run the opposition ragged at the varsity level for four quarters every game?
“Before school, I go into the weight room to do speed drills and work with resistance bands. That helps my transition in endurance. I train with my high school coach, Coach Galloway, on my explosiveness. He guides me through everything I do.”
Which parts of your skillset are you working on this offseason?
“I’m working on being a defensive back. This upcoming season, the coaches want me at corner. I am working on that this offseason.”
You’re playing 7v7 ball with Premium, how is that helping improve your game?
“Premium is life changing. I have not been in an organization like this. They are teaching me a lot. All things that will help me in varsity ball this year.”
If you haven’t started already, when do you start working out with the Dons as part of spring ball?
“We haven’t started our workouts for 7v7 yet. We will start 7v7 practices later this spring. Since the season ended, we’ve been doing morning workouts at 6:00 a.m.”
You mentioned cornerback, where all else might we see you on the field during your sophomore season?
“My coaches have talked to me about offensive plays, like doing jet sweeps. With DJ (Ralph) at quarterback, he can spread the ball around. I may get some snaps at slot – quick plays in open space. I’ll also be on kick and punt return.”
It is really early for you, but are any schools showing interest in you yet?
“Last year I went to a USC camp. When I was at that camp, Illinois, Nevada, and Wisconsin got my information.”
Nice. Have you taken any unofficial visits yet?
“I went to UCLA a couple of months ago.”
Do you have any planned visits lined up?
“I am planning on visiting Arizona State, USC, and UCLA this offseason.”
Are you competing at any camps and/or combines this spring or summer?
“I’m going to a Rivals camp in San Francisco on March 11. I plan to attend a USC camp again this year.”
Last question. What do you love about playing football?
“For me, I like how football builds character. The competition level that challenges you and getting better at the sport. You learn lessons from the mistakes you make. It is fun. I’ve met a lot of people because of football. It has played a big factor in my life. That is what I love most about it.”
Elisha, I appreciate your time today. Good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
