Donovan Smith had what many would call a breakthrough season in 2017. As a strong-armed freshman, he helped lead Diamond Ranch High School to an 8-4 record by passing for 976 yards off 40 completions with nine touchdowns tossed and two rushing scores. After an offseason playing 7v7 ball with Ground Zero and a transfer to Los Osos, the 6-2.5, 200-pound, field general has been fine-tuning his skills ready for that breakout campaign in 2018.
After camp performances at Utah and Notre Dame, and with interest pouring in from Tennessee, UCLA, and USC, I sat down for a catch-up interview with the Class of 2021 California talent while he was still in South Bend (Sunday) to see how his offseason workouts are coming along with an update on his recruiting prospects.

Interview
Donovan, how are your offseason workouts going?
“They are going well. I have done a lot of strength and conditioning, and a lot of footwork drills. I am working out with QB Calvary this offseason.”
What have you been focused on with your technique and overall game?
“I have been working on a lot of things – my footwork, getting faster for the season, better stamina, getting faster on my drops, and working on my release with more snap on my ball.”
How have spring practices with Los Osos gone?
“They went great. We ran a lot of new plays and lined up in new formations. We had some passing tournaments, and we won.”
That’s always encouraging. How is the team looking heading into the 2018 season?
“We look good. I think we will do well. I think we have a great chance of winning the Baseline League this year.”
Have you attended any camps this offseason?
“I have attended camps at Utah and Notre Dame.”
How did the Utah camp go?
“It went well. I think I performed well. There was a lot of competition out there and a lot of quarterbacks there. But, I feel I did well.”
How did the Notre Dame camp go?
“It went great. I performed well there too. I saw how I matched up with other QBs across the country.”
What all did you do well at the Notre Dame camp?
“I did well with my deep ball, during the one-on-ones, on air, and during the individuals.”
Did you get any feedback from the Notre Dame coaches?
“Their QB coach, Coach (Tom) Rees, he likes how I throw deep balls. He gave me some things to work on, mainly my footwork and rhythm.”
Did any college coaches come by Los Osos to meet with you in-person or to watch you throw this offseason?
“Yes. Utah, their recruiting coordinator came by, USC, UCLA, and Tennessee also came by our school.”
Which other schools that you have not already mentioned are showing recruiting interest?
“Wyoming
Last question. What are you doing or are you going to do away from football this summer for a little fun and break from it all?
“I am going to Medieval Times restaurant coming up and I plan on going to the movies.”
Donovan, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.
“Thank you.”
