Sacred Heart Prep is rolling into Peninsula-Bay League action like a freight train on maximum power. The Gators are 6-0 on the season and averaging 35 points per game led by Class of 2021 dual-threat quarterback Raymond Price III. Price (6-1, 185) has thrown for 435 yards off 34 completions with four touchdowns without throwing an interception and the emerging sophomore has added 62 yards on the ground with another score.
In a Recruiting News Guru stylized catch-up interview, I sat down with Price gaining insight on the Gators improvement in the record column from 3-7 a year ago to a perfect record this season while learning more about his evolving talents in the pocket.
Interview
Ray, last season you played some varsity as a receiver and corner while playing quarterback at the JV level. Now you are in the thick of it as the starting QB for the Gators. What adjustments have you made to your game through the first part of the season?
“One adjustment that I have made to my game would be speeding up my drop-back. The biggest difference from junior varsity to varsity football would be the speed of the game. However, while speeding up all aspects of your game, you also have to be attentive to what the defense is doing simultaneously.”
What has been the most challenging part of playing quarterback for you this season?
“The most challenging thing about playing quarterback this season would be taking what the defense gives me. As a quarterback, a dual-threat at that, you are always looking for that big play downfield to your wide receiver and if not with your arm making a spectacular play with your feet. But, I have definitely learned that check downs are always the right choice when nothing is open downfield.”
Where are you seeing the biggest gains in your development with the experience on the field?
“The biggest development in my game this year so far has definitely been footwork. I worked on my footwork all throughout the offseason, as well as the summer.”
What are the aspects of your game that you are working on each week in practice?
“I am working on consistently getting my hips into every single throw I make and not just arming it. Even if it is a defensive period where I am running the opponent’s plays, I still try to bring my legs into the equation while throwing.”
You guys just stomped on San Mateo 44-0, how did the game go for you?
“I went 4 of 6 for 68 yards. I had a pass go for 40-plus yards but unfortunately it got called back by a holding penalty.
You guys get Aragon on Friday, what kind of challenge will their defense present to you as a quarterback?
“The thing everyone knows about Aragon is that they are always going to be big and physical. So, I think the key to winning this week is to be physical and get the ball out quick to my playmakers and let them do what they do best, make big plays.”
On both sides of the ball the Gators are doing well and kicking butt, what do you guys have to do to keep this momentum going for an undefeated regular season going into the playoffs?
“I believe to continue on with the great season that we’re having, we have to be physical on the defensive side on the ball and keep being smart on offense, as well as execute our plays to the best of our abilities.”
Ray, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of the regular season.
“Thank you.”
