When Jackson State snuck into San Diego stealing three-star do-everything athlete Herman Smith away from the Pac-12 and Mountain West programs, they shocked the recruiting trail on the west coast. Smith’s versatility and athleticism shines through no matter which position he is playing for Lincoln High School – corner or safety or running back and receiver. And each of those positions are potential landing spots for him at the collegiate level with the Tigers.

In an RNG update interview, Smith covers ground on his transition from offseason workouts to the beginnings of his senior season taking on California competition one last time.

Interview

Herman, the long offseason is finally over. How does it feel to be back on the field getting after it with the pads on this spring?

Man, it feels good. It has been over a year since I have been on the field. It feels good playing with my brothers, the whole Lincoln team. Feels good being out there again.

Where all are you lining for Lincoln during the 2020 season?

I am playing receiver, running back, safety, and corner.

For your roles on offense, how did you prepare over the offseason fine-tuning your skills?

I was training with the best in San Diego. I was working with Coach Carter and DC Athletics. This offseason I was working on my speed and agility to get me ready for game day. I have been training almost every day over the offseason to prepare.

What did you focus on with your skills on defense?

I was working on my backpedal and breaking on the ball, getting better with all my coverages, especially my man coverage.

What were some of the workouts you were doing to increase your speed and burst?

Running hills, beach and sand workouts, getting my legs stronger, and I was on the track too.

From last season to the beginnings of the 2020 season, where are you seeing the differences in your game?

This year I am more aggressive and more confident because I know what I am doing. I am more comfortable on the field because I have been playing the game for so long. Now, I am used to everything.

With the focus on offense, what are you doing at a higher level?

My route running, that has gotten way better. Everything has gotten better – my hands, I am better at catching the ball. I have improved a lot all over.

And on defense, where are you seeing the biggest improvements?

Everything is faster. I am breaking faster and getting interceptions. My speed, it is really showing now. The offseason work has paid off.

What goals have you set for yourself for the 2020 season this spring?

To win all our games, get better as a team, play as team, and just get better overall. Everyone is already getting better.

You signed with Jackson State, how is that bond continuing with the coaching staff?

I text with them every week, almost every day. We talk about the games. Since my high school games have started, I show them my stats, my videos, and we talk about everything.

At which position did they recruit you to play?

They recruited me as an athlete. Any position they want me to play, I will play.

When will you report?

I am not sure yet. I think I will report in June.

Herman, it was great getting some time in with you today. Wishing you and Lincoln a successful rest of the season.

Thank you.
