Big, strong, fast, athletic, and a playmaker, all the attributes that go into describing the game of AJ Jones. The 6-3, 190-pound, receiver was the do-all player for Colony High School during the 2019 season on offense rushing for 72 yards off 11 carries while completing 6 of 9 passes for 106 yards with one score. But his talents shined brightest on the outside. Using all the giftings, Jones was able to secure 19 passes covering 521 yards with four trips into the end zone. College programs are finding the Ontario area product with Colorado, Colorado State, and San Diego State showing interest ahead of a planned breakout junior campaign.
In an RNG first-look interview, Jones updates us on his offseason grind with insight on some of the new positions he will be playing when the California season gets going in early January.
Interview
AJ, when guys talk about explosive plays, that seemed like all you were doing during the 2019 season. You were producing one big play after another highlighted by the 90-something yard touchdown reception. Going into your toolbelt, what was working for you last season leading to all the big plays?
I was running my deep routes well and my coaches were calling the plays. I was making the plays I had to last season.
The confidence your quarterback had in you shows, which speaks volumes to you. There were some “just get it in AJ’s area” throws that you turned into a fantastic play. How was that trust and chemistry built?
It was built in practice running plays and doing one-on-ones; all that happened in practice. We had that connection from the work put in.
Beyond your hands and athleticism, what are some of the other traits to your game that make you so dangerous?
I can play any position on the field, any position asked of me. I was trying to make plays at the best rate I could.
What style of offense will the Titans run during the 2020 season?
We have a new coaching staff, I think we will be more of a pro-style offense. We will be working on that when we get going again.
Do you know which routes you might be running this season?
I have an idea, but I am not sure yet. We’ve been talking about our offense, but not in specifics yet.
Within the offense last season, what were some of the routes you were running?
They were using me as a deep threat. I was running streaks, posts, some stops, and slants.
Since the season ended, what have you been working on with the small details of your game as a receiver?
This offseason I have been working on my speed and my route running, that is the big part of my game at receiver.
How have you worked to push your burst, agility, and speed to that next level?
I’m doing sprints, using bands, and doing speed training. I am doing a lot of running and drills to run faster this season.
With the training put into your game, which trainers are working you out and what are you working on with them?
Over the summer I went to Georgia to the Terrance Edwards Academy. Out here, I worked with one of my coaches going over routes. I have started to work with Coach Rob (Bourne) on my speed.
What is your focus on the field with Coach Rob?
With him it is about speed. He is getting me even faster.
Have you put down a 40-yard time?
Yes, I ran a hand-timed low 4.5.
Nice. You may not know all the things you will be doing on the field during the 2020 season, but to the best of your knowledge where all might you line up?
I am for sure playing both sides of the ball. I will be playing some safety and corner, receiver, and I might be on special teams as well.
Are you excited about getting time in the secondary this season?
Yes, I am super excited.
With all the work put into your athletic abilities and skills, where are you already seeing the biggest improvements?
My route running is way better now. I am faster, stronger, and bigger. Everything has improved. I am way different than I was a year ago.
Do you compete in any other sports at Colony?
Yes, sir. Basketball and I ran track.
Which position(s) in basketball did you play and how did the season go?
We did well. I play the 4 (PF) and 5 (C). We had a really good season.
Do you remember your stat line in basketball?
No, but I’m a really good defensive player and good on rebounds.
I believe that; no doubt. Once the 2020 season kicks off in California first of January, what do you want to showcase this season?
I want to show the college coaches that I am a baller and that I can play at the next level. I want to show them that I am able and capable of playing at the next level.
AJ, keep up all the hard work this offseason. I am excited to see the season you will be turning in this year.
Thank you, sir.
