Mater Dei High School’s 2020 roster just got a whole lot better with the addition of outside linebacker Eoghan Kerry. Kerry spent the 2019 season cracking helmets with Bakersfield’s Centennial High School tallying 70 stops with nine sacks earning All-Area honors against California Division I competition. After his sophomore season, the 6-3.5, 222-pound, backer picked up an offer from Nevada with Power 5 Programs across the country showing interest. Suiting up with a national powerhouse program is sure to bring even more offers and recruiting interest Kerry’s way.

Taking another visit to the RNG Lab, Kerry updates us on his new role with the Monarchs, offseason workouts, and expanding recruiting prospects.

Interview

Eoghan, let’s begin with the big news first. You have transferred from Centennial to national powerhouse Mater Dei. At which position will you play with the Monarchs when the 2020 season begins?

Right now, I am slotted at outside linebacker.

What style of defense are they executing?

We have several different packages but the base is a nickel and 3-4.

All of this is brand new, but what are the workouts or scheduled practice events with Mater Dei going forward?

I am really excited; on August 17th, we start conditioning and weight lifting and school starts on the 31st. I cannot wait to be on the field with my new team and coaches.

The transfer aside, I always want to catch up to see where you are at since we last spoke. How are the offseason workouts coming along?

Really well. I have been conditioning, working on my strength and my technique. This offseason I have been working with my trainer. He has helped me get limber and more fluid with my hips. I have been lifting weights getting stronger and faster than I have ever been.

Last we spoke you were working really hard on your cover skills and overall technique. Where are you seeing the improvements with the time and efforts put into the small details of your game?

I still have to work on everything overall, but my one-on-ones are a lot better. Now I can stay with receivers and play zone better. I can move from target to target while keeping eyes on the quarterback. It feels great but I still have to work on everything.

You mentioned this a minute ago, what have you been doing to keep adding power and strength to what you bring to the field?

Working a lot on my hips, doing high interval intensity workouts, power clean, shrugs, box jumps, and explosive movements to help with those fast-twitch movement that will help me out there.

How have you taken your conditioning, speed, and agility to that next level this summer?

I have been taking speed and conditioning training very seriously, maybe most seriously this offseason. We go to the park every night running drills and working on combine stuff. I am in the best shape of my life; I feel great.

Have you been watching film on college and/or NFL players to further your understanding of playing linebacker and the game?

Yes, I’ve been watching film on a lot of pros and college players. One player I have been watching a lot is Isiah Simmons (Clemson). Seeing what he can do with his pass rushing and covering slot, it is amazing. I record myself and see what they are doing and apply all of that to my game. I have been watching a lot of film, studying plays, and seeing what you can do in different packages and stuff like that this offseason.

Let’s get into some recruiting news. You have the offer from Nevada, which schools are showing interest this summer?

There are several schools showing interest; Arizona State has shown the most. Stanford, Washington, Utah, Oregon, Clemson, USC, Purdue, Notre Dame, and Northwestern are all showing interest as well.

When the opportunity opens up again, are there any visits you would like to take?

Yes. I was supposed to go to USC in March, but the dead period came early. I’d like to see their campus and facilities and I want to see Notre Dame and Clemson. This spring I was supposed to visit Washington, Fresno State, Cal, Oregon, Utah, and Stanford, I’d still like to visit those schools.

Eoghan, it was great catching up with you today. I appreciate your time and wish you success with your workouts with Mater Dei this fall.

Thank you.
