The 2019 season was an action-packed campaign for Class of 2023 talent Justyn Rhett. Rhett was dynamic on both sides of the ball showcasing elite speed on offense at running back and receiver while cultivating his skills as a corner. The game-changing abilities against his freshmen peer group and junior varsity competition earned a late season varsity call-up to the Bishop Gorman squad. Once the 2020 season for the Gaels kicks off against Nevada 4A teams, Rhett has the “athlete” abilities in his back pocket should the coaches need him on offense or special teams, but the focus of his game will be at corner this season. That focus will be closely watched by college scouts with three offers already extended and others taking notice.

In an RNG first interview, Rhett talks about his play on the field during his freshman season and how he is preparing for varsity action in 2020.

Interview

Justyn, you were a show-stopper last season with the ball in your hands flying past everyone. During your freshman season, where all were you lining up on the field?

I played returner, running back, receiver, and corner.

How were the coaches getting the rock in your hands during the 2019 season?

Usually on long passes or a pitch out in the backfield if we needed it.

As a running back, inside and outside receiver, when the 2019 season had ended what did you feel were the overall strengths to your game?

I feel like I got better on offense. I was a defensive player my whole life, that helped my skill set as a receiver.

What did you feel were the strengths to your overall game at corner at the end of last season?

Not letting anything go deep and containing runs.

Where will you be lining up for Bishop Gorman during the 2020 season?

This year I am staying on defense at corner.

Once you entered into the offseason, how did you work to develop more of a burst and even more of that top-end speed?

Running with bags, hills, doing squats, and more work like that.

Did you get to post a 40-yard dash this offseason?

The last time I lasered was with my trainer, I was around a 4.56.

How have you worked to improve your game as a defensive back?

I have been bettering myself doing footwork drill and reading receiver routes more clearly.

Going into recruiting. How many offers do you have?

I have three offers; Arizona State, North Texas, and West Virginia.

Which programs that you know of are showing interest?

Oregon State and Colorado.

Once visits are allowed again, are there any campuses you’d like to see?

Arizona State.

Last question. What goals have you set for the extended offseason?

To better prepare myself for the season and get bigger and faster.

Justyn, thanks for your time today and good luck with the rest of your offseason workouts.

Thank you.
