The learning process and layering of abilities has been a two-year development course for Drew Viotto, but all of that comes to test fall of 2021. Those who have seen the 6-4, 220-pound, quarterback sling the pigskin know how good he is. The Walled Lake Western High School standout has been patient playing behind a senior readying to take over the Warriors offense after two seasons of junior varsity ball. Beyond the geeked Michigan high school football fans ready to see him put a full season in at the varsity level, so are college programs. Viotto already has three offers down with a slew of programs wanting to see him toss the ball around this summer at one of their camps for a deeper evaluation.
In an RNG update interview, Viotto stopped by the Lab for another detailed conversation getting into workouts and his summer camp circuit.
Interview
Drew, how did the 2020 season go for you on the field?
It was alright. I played JV, but I was not in a whole lot on varsity. I was learning from (senior) Zach Trainor. In every game I always had the head set on. I was taking mental reps all year.
As a passing quarterback, which areas of your game saw the biggest growth?
Reading the defense and being able to get the ball out quicker. This year the game really slowed down for me. I was better understanding what the defense was doing.
Understanding the game is as important for a quarterback as arm talent. How did your skills reading coverages and recognizing fronts and blitzes grow?
It grew a lot. I met with my coach three or four days a week. We would go over situational offense. For example, they are in a Cover 3, it is third down, what do you do? That made it simple for me come game time.
What are you working on this offseason with your fundamentals?
I am working to get my release faster and on getting my mobility up to run more. I am working on getting bigger, stronger, and faster every day.
How are you pushing your football IQ to that next level this spring?
I am working with my coach every day and watching a lot of football. I watch how Tom Brady reads a defense. Every day I am trying to get one percent better.
Are you playing 7v7 this spring?
Yes, I am.
How is the 7v7 season going for you?
Great. I am playing with Sound Mind, Sound Body. We’ve won two championships.
Have you gone to any camps this offseason and/or do you have any coming up where you may go compete?
Yes. One camp I went to was a Rising Stars Midnight Madness camp and I went to an Under Armour camp. I plan on going to a Rivals camp on May 8 in Ohio. And for college camps, I plan on going to Tennessee, Michigan State, Iowa State, Purdue, Penn State, Northwestern, and Toledo camp. They have all invited me to their camps.
Cool. Let’s keep with the colleges. Which programs are showing interest?
Michigan State, Penn State, Northwestern, Tennessee, Iowa State, all the schools that have invited me to camps.
How many offers do you have now?
I have three: Bowling Green, Central Michigan, and Syracuse.
Coming up, are there any visits you may take?
I am going to the Michigan State spring game this Saturday.
What all do you plan on doing while you are there for the game?
We will walk the campus. Because we are still in the dead period, I don’t think the coaches can talk to me yet.
True. Drew, I enjoyed catching back up with you today. Wishing you great success at all the planned camps this offseason. Keep us in the loop.
Thank you, sir.
